Cultures Of Soul - African Music of All Diasporas - Crate Digging Around The World Vol.5

Following up on their 2015 West Indies Vintage Funk mix, American label Cultures Of Soul are back on our podcast with a new episode in the series, this time expanding its Carribean crate-digging mission with US Jazz and African grooves: African music of all diasporas!

Featured in this mix, a track extracted from Cultures Of Soul's latest release, SJOB Movement's 2nd album "Friendship Train" from 1977, reissued with help from Uchenna Ikonne (Comb & Razor). The band incorporated at the time Moog synthesizers sounds to their afro beat formula and the recipe became even tastier. Enjoy the mix and don't hesitate to grab the SJOB Movement LP on COS' store. Italy-born but Denmark-based Alex Puddu is an outstanding composer of soundtracks and a new millennium Funk revivalist with a variety of styles and moods under his belt. He's released 3 albums with Puddu Varano between 1998 and 2001, 5 albums between 2004 and 2010 as Alex Puddu And The Butterfly Collectors, one album with The Moonfires in 2015, and no less than 6 albums under his own guise since 2010! Anthony Joseph - The Heritage Mix

Rodinia - Asteroid Mix (German Space-Rock Classics)

How many articles and mixes have we published related to bands such as The Poets of Rhythm, The Whitefield Brothers or Karl Hector and The Malcouns? If you've been following Paris DJs for some time, the name J. Whitefield should at least ring a bell. He's one of the great musicians/producers of our time, based in Munich, Germany. His latest project is called Rodinia, with saxophonist and keyboardist Johannes Schleiermacher (Woima Collective, International Ducks, Onom Agemo and The Disco Jumpers) they've recorded a first album titled 'Drumside Dreamside', released this fall on Now-Again Records. The album is divided in two parts — one for each side of the vinyl of course — a psychedelic krautrock half followed by a trippy ambient one. A perfect record to lay down in an horizontal dreamy state.

To celebrate this release, he cooked a mix of German space-rock classics, which some of you may already have heard on Now-Again's soundcloud page (here-). Here's the Grant Phabao-mastered version of this mix for you to download, superbly illustrated by French designer Ben Hito.

American label Cultures Of Soul was last featured in our Best Of 2014 selection with its superb 'Tropical Disco Hustle' compilation. We had invited COS in november 2011 for a mix of covers and in may 2012 for an African funk one. Now the label is back with a second volume of hard-to-find, disco-influenced, cosmic boogie or funk from Trinidad & Tobago, Jamaica or the Bahamas, and it was high time to send a new invitation, in order to celebrate the release of that new 'Tropical Disco Hustle' compilation! Ghost Writerz - Sharp And Ready Selection

While a majority of labels shift their focus on reissues (with no production costs) and live bands (with a simple old school business model: touring and selling merch), there still are a few out there who do the real job: digging "in the now", finding, signing new artists and releasing new productions. Brighton's finest Tru Thoughts is one of those and it's already been going on for 15 years now… Reason enough for Paris DJs to celebrate the label's 15th anniversary, by inviting four of their artists to do an exclusive mix, starting with UK Sound System Culture sensation Ghost Writerz. The duo is the first signing of Tru Thoughts brand new sub-label Sharp and Ready, designed to spotlight the "new wave" of artists on the UK sound system scene...

Besides Quantic and DJ Vadim, this mix was for us a source of a lot of new discoveries. Paris DJs is, obviously, based in Paris, and we don't have any (other) media about groovy music over here in France so it's hard to find out about new bands. The reggae/dub/soundsystem scene has always been big in the UK, but it has been years if not decades since it started getting THAT interesting again. This mix sets things right. Analog Africa Selection Vol.5

A bit more then a year ago I received a message from Déni Shain, a french music producer based in Lisbon. In that mail he asked me if I would be interested in releasing music from Cabo Verde since he was close to Chico and Wilson, the 2 DJs behind Celeste Mariposa (an excellent portuguese/angolan soundsystem specialised in lusophone music). 'I can convince them to make their record collection available to you' he added. I asked him if he could send me a selection, not knowing the amount of work my request would represent. I only later found out that the three-men-team had spent a whole week to pick and choose what they thought was adequate and another few days to wash the record and digitise the music.
I received that selection in March 2013 and I haven't stopped listening to it since. I clearly remember having that wonderful feeling when songs keep growing on you the more you listen. 'Very good sign' I thought! The collection of songs I had received became the base for a whole concept and we all started criss crossing Europe and Cabo Verde looking for more music and looking for the Cap-Verdien artists we loved. Déni Shain became an important asset for the Analog Africa label, supporting us with remixes and mixes but more importantly with an addictive positive energy.
After his first mix for us, the amazing 'Ghana Soundtrack' made out of unreleased and rare tracks from the small west african musical powerhouse, here is his second instalment made of handpicked dancefloor filler. A huge shout goes to legendary african music connoisseur John Beatle and to my close friend Keith Salter for offering us some of the fantastic music included here.

Todd Simon's Ethio-Cali Ensemble presents Wax and Gold

Wax and Gold (aka Semena Werq) is a form of traditional Ethiopian poetry that has one surface meaning, known as wax, and multiple hidden meanings, known as gold. Musicians in Ethiopia have used Wax and Gold to explore topics such as spirituality, politics, and matters of the heart throughout the ages. On November 17, 2013, the Ethio-Cali Ensemble performed a special set of music at the Blue Whale (the best place in Los Angeles to go see live Jazz) inspired by the concept of Wax and Gold. Ethio-Cali's 'Minister of Information', Sonny Abegaze, curated compositions from the catalogues of Hailu Mergia and Walias, Alemayehu Eshete, The Police Orchestra, and other Ethio-Jazz luminaries to be performed on this special night. 01. Emahoy Tsegue-Mariam Guebru - Mother's Love
Emahoy Tsegue-Mariam Guebru is a classical pianist and composer who was born in Addis Abeba in 1923. She was ordained as a nun at the age of 21 and now lives in an Orthodox monastary in Jerusalem. Emahoy's music is intimate, delicate, joyful, and melancholy all at the same time. We draw a lot of inspiration from her music and personal journey. At 90, Emahoy is finally starting to get some of the recognition she deserves.

02. Lieut. Mesfin Haile, Hirut Beqele and The Police Orchestra - (track title unknown)
This song comes from a Voice of America reel that was recorded in 1961. It features Lieutenant Mesfin Haile and Hirut Beqele accompanied by the Police Orchestra, along with an amazing violin player. 03. Getatchew Mekurya - Ambassel (Slow)
This waltz-like tune is by the most popular saxophonist in Ethiopia, Getatchew Mekurya. It was recorded in 1972 and was originally released on the Philips record label during the heyday of Ethio Jazz. It was later released on 'Ethiopiques Vol. 14: Negus of Ethiopian Sax'. Getatchew draws much of his inspiration from Shellela, a traditional vocal style sung by warriors before going into battle. You can hear this sentiment in his melismatic style of playing. Getatchew still performs regularly in Ethiopia, Europe, and Canada.

04. Alem Girma Band ft. Alemayehu Eshete - Ambassel (Fast)
Referred to as the Ethiopian James Brown, Alemayehu Eshete is a talented and spirited vocalist who first got his break with Addis Ababa's famous Police Orchestra. Ambassel is an area found in the Amhara region of Ethiopia with the root word ‘amb' meaning fortress. It is also the name of one of the major musical scales in the country. There are various versions of Ambassel that have been recorded by different musicians over the years. The lyrics to this version speak of a man who is out of luck in his pursuit of love. Alemayehu Eshete also has a slow version of Ambassel that has a completely definitely feel... definitely worth checking out!

05. Mulatu Astatke - Yefikir Tezeta
This slow burner by Mulatu Astatke is a favorite amongst the members of Ethio Cali. So much so that one of our drummers/percussionists, Te'Amir Yohannes Sweeney, produced a tune that sampled this track. This song was originally released on Philips International as a 45. It was later reissued on the compilation 'New York - Addis - London: The Story of Ethio Jazz 1965-1975'. Eternal gratitude to master Mulatu!

06. Alemayehu Eshete and Hirut Beqele - Temeles
This is a love duet that features Alemayehu Eshete and Hirut Beqele. The lyrics speak of a man who has left his lover for work. His lover misses him dearly and is pleading for his return. This is a classic example of an unrequited love ballad, a theme commonly found in Ethiopian music. Our interpretation of this tune has energy and intensity, and we substitute horns for the vocal lines.

07. Mahmoud Ahmed - Fitsum Dink Lidj Nesh
Mahmoud Ahmed is a beloved vocalist from the Gurage region of Ethiopia. He shined shoes as a boy before getting his break as a singer with Emperor Haile Selassie I's Imperial Body Guard Band. He later recorded with groups such as The Venus Band, Ibex Band, and Walias. Fitsum Dink Lidj Nesh finds Mahmoud Ahmed singing poetically about the beauty of an Abyssinian woman. He goes into great detail describing her lovely features. He wonders what her name is and finally calls her Fitsum Dink Lidj Nesh, which translates to 'you are an absolute miracle”.

Analog Africa Selection Vol.3 - Los Diablos Del Rimo Mix by DJ PepeSol

Samy Ben Rejdeb and his Analog Africa label upped the Paris DJs podcast level of excellence quite hard way back in march 2008, when he sent us his 'Analog Africa Selection Vol.1' mix, featuring a few extracts from his superb compilation of raw and psychedelic afro sounds from 1970s Benin and Togo, 'African Scream Contest'. It was by far the best mix we had ever posted at the time.

Then at the end of the same year he came back with a second volume, 'Analog Africa Selection Vol.2'celebrating his first Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou release, 'The Vodoun Effect' from 1972-75.

Many have been following the story from that point on… 'Legends of Benin 1969-81', 'Echos Hypnotiques' from Orchestre Poly-Rytmo 1969-1979, both released in 2009, the same year we organized the first Ebo Taylor show in Europe, thanks to Samy who had booked him for the 'Africa Delay' party in Frankfurt!

2010 saw the release of an Anibal Velasquez anthology from 1962-1978, 'Mambo Loco', the 'Afro-beat Airways' compilation from Ghana and Togo 1972-79, and an 'Angola Soundtrack ' covering the 1968-76 era from Luanda.

In 2011 Analog Africa kept the flow of releases steady with essential reissues from Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou-Dahomey ('The 1st Album' from 1973), Ghanean afrofunkster Rob ('Funky Rob Way'), and a compilation of mid to late 70s African Soul from Burkina-Faso, 'Bambara Mystic Soul').

Which brings us to 2012 and another masterful must-listen for all the ears looking out for some tropical-but-different kind of sounds, 'The Bariba Sound' from Le Super Borgou de Parakou in north-east Benin… Now comes a new compilation of obscure tropical Colombian music jewels from the 1960s to the 1980s, 'Diabos Del Ritmo', for which we went to Frankfurt to meet Samy for an upcoming portrait to be published on Paris DJs soon. The double CD, quadruple vinyl set was just released, and we should be receiving our records anytime now so stay connected for the review…

A few weeks ago we had the excellent surprise of receiving from Samy a message saying 'look at this artcover for a mix we prepared for Paris DJs and my new record's release this week, music will be coming your way soon'. The mix followed a few days later, sent by DJ PepeSol from the Sabrosa Sound Sistema in Brisbane, Australia, who describes it like this:

'A conclusive mix by Sabrosa Son Sistema's, PepeSol, hailing from the Sub Tropical continent of Australia focused on the Afro leanings of the sounds from Colombia's northern Coastline and in celebration of the anticipated Analog Africa release 'Los Diablos Del Ritmo'.  From the rich harmonics of Andres Landero's Hohner accordion followed by deep Afro bass lines signature to 'La Costa', this is a mix that ducks and weaves the back streets of a Colombian soundscape, an ode to the bubbling Colombian melting pot.' - DJ Pepesol

Fully mastered by Grant Phabao in Paris, this mix is definitively an international collaborative work and number 397 in our podcast of mixes.

Todd Simon is a trumpeter, multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger and performer living and working in sunny Los Angeles, CA. Todd has found a niche providing soulful horn and string sounds for countless projects, many of which have been featured on Paris DJs: The Echocentrics, Connie Price & the Keystones, the Quantic Soul Orchestra, Antibalas, Clutchy Hopkins, Madlib's Sound Directions, El Michels Affair, The Lions, Ocote Soul Sounds, Spanky Wilson, Breakestra, Flying Lotus, Mochilla Timeless with Mulatu Astatke and Arthur Verocai, Sugarman 3, Orgone, Nickodemus, Ohmega Watts, Amayo's Fu-Arkist-Ra, N.A.S.A., Mayer Hawthorne... His current projects include Adrian Younge's Venice Dawn, The Decoders, Todd Simon's Ethio-Cali Ensemble, and upcoming albums of The Delfonics, Ghostface Killah, CSS, Rhye and Quadron.
Following-up on our open invitation in the Clutchy Hopkins interview that never happened, Todd contacted us saying "I'd love to compile a specially-themed dj mix for you (as mentioned in the Clutchy interview, figure out a theme and I'll hook you all up!!!". We asked him if he was into the current American Dub and Reggae scene… Well Todd did a real investigative work, adding some information on each track he picked, and we had the full thing illustrated by our man Ben Hito, for your aural and visual pleasure.

I've been following posts and releases from Paris DJs for quite some time. Their eclectic tastes in World Music, DJ culture and new music have been a great resource for me over the years. Although I'm not that proud of the country I reside in, the US does supply some great Dub sounds. 'The United States of Dub' is a collection that features rarities only found on vinyl, brand new recordings that are finally being leaked, versions that might have been looked over and tracks that I've dug up from my vaults. Some of America's best Dub producers are showcased on this mix representing a sound that pays respect to Jamaica and the UK. One might not look to the US for Dub, but hopefully after listening to this mix you might want to dig deeper. (Todd Simon)

Quantic - Cumbia 78 RPM

To conclude Soundway Records' 10th anniversary celebration on Paris DJs all summer long, special guest Will Holland a.k.a. Quantic has prepared a unique and stylish mix of 78 RPM Colombian Cumbia! The famous producer/musician & DJ based out of his Cali, Colombia studio, Sonido del Valle, never stops working and touring. Hot on the heels of his impressive Original Sound of Cumbia compilation of colombian Cumbia & Porro 1948-1979 (Soundway), he put out earlier this year a marvelous collaboration album with Alice Russell Look Around The Corner (Tru Thoughts), and launched this summer the new all-star Colombian band Ondatrópica, with Mario Galeano of Frente Cumbiero. Their debut album was released this summer on Soundway Records.

Thanks to Joss Yerbury at Kartel Creative for helping us build this series of 4 mixes. Happy 10 years to Soundway Records, let's hope for more decades like this first ones! Batida - Tirei o Chapéu Mixtape

A distinctly vibrant project with it’s feet firmly rooted in the past, Batida combine samples from old 1970s Angolan tracks with modern electronic dance music. Here's what he has to say about our Paris DJs invitation: "I did this mix as did early Batida radio shows: mixing old tunes with new beats. On the old side you have Angolan tunes i choose not based on the artist but on grooves i like, some of i have sampled on Batida tracks and, on the new beats, you have favourite Lisbon producers such as my buddy Beat Laden on an unreleased remix, Marfox with his minimal productions, on a track from his EP, Conductor of Buraka fame, but of Conjunto Ngonguenha fame for me, on an unreleased track he shared, another unreleased remix by Octa Push and some Luandan stars: Kilamu, Dj Znobia and my favourite MC, Bruno M. who promised to feature on a future Batida track as i djed for him on a show. Ending track is a remix by Mauricio Pacheco, a brasilian producer, who picked on a Teta Lando classic with a still inspiring lyric. An anthemn that always gives me chills. Hope you feel it."

Chicha Libre - Are Molesting Laura

Brooklyn's psychedelic tropical and surf-cumbia act Chicha Libre are specialized in deviant covers since their very first album Sonido Amazonico. They've just released a fantastic new album called Canibalismo with a similar spicy recipe. In that respect they belong to the great chicha (Peru's own version of the cumbia) fusion's tradition with elements of literally every kind of existing music: funk, pop, rock, French variétés, krautrock, classical music, etc. In 2007 and 2010 Chicha Libre and Barbes Records owner Olivier Conan released two must-have compilations (The Roots of Chicha & The Roots Of Chicha 2), revealing this hidden latin genre to the astonished eyes of the world. That's why Olivier was a perfect match for a cumbia and latin Molesting Laura guest mix after the great interview we've just done with him. The result is a wild and unexpected clash of his personal tastes and obsessions for hybridations. Don't miss Chicha Libre playing their very first french gig at Paris' New Morning on June 30th.

We are a kind of post-modern-ethno-Jugband says Hazmat Modine's frontman Wade Schuman in the long interview we've just published (read it here). Beta Hector's - Derriere Shakin' R&B Mix

Bassist, producer and DJ Simon Hill aka Beta Hector is our special guest this week with a groovy' RnB mix! He was the man behind the superb funk and soul Baby Charles album - on Record Kicks. We had Grant Phabao rework one of his tracks into reggae, you can still download it here. He's the bass player in uprising band Derrière, a hot rhythm and blues band who's 2nd single is produced and mixed by our recent guests DJ Format and Simon James of The Simonsound, you can check their mix here.
As Beta Hector he's recently released a stunning Sunbeam Insulin electronic soul long player (on Tru Thoughts Recordings), followed just last week by a limited 7 inch with the exclusive Boi Peixe Theme, a killer laidback afro-latin groover - you can buy it here and there are 300 copies only.

We haven't even talked about the remixes he's putting out there but you gotta try finding his rework of Marvin Gaye's What's Going On... Well there's just so much eclectic creativity in this Beta Hector guy with that we couldn't resist on challenging him with a theme for a mix, and the man delivered the goods right on point. In your face hot and burnin' derriere-shakin' R'n'B!!

"So, I approached Djouls with the concept of doing a Beta Hector mixtape for Paris DJs to celebrate the 7 inch I have coming out on HHV with Quantic, and he discovered that I play upright bass in Vintage Soul / R&B band Derriere. He told me he was really interested in this scene and that Paris DJs could use an R&B mixtape. Well I guess it's a good job that I've been stocking up on this kind of music as well as all the other genres that I like to put into my DJ sets... Of course I had to oblige, so here's my 100% vinyl selection of timeless gems that will take you back almost sixty years. When we asked Erik Rug (friend/collaborator/neighbour/resident DJ at David Lynch's club Le Silencio in Paris) for some musical tips for an upcoming 21st Century Afro mix last week, he pointed us right away towards DJ Zhao's Punk In Africa mixtape, demonstrating the connectedness between Rock and Roll and its African roots, between power chords and dance beats, between decades past and today, between defiant youth in London and defiant youth in Zimbabwe - and that the same rhythmic blood and spirit of revolt runs in all of our veins. This mix includes exclusive mashups and re-edits, and goes from Punk to heavily Africanized Rebel Rock to Post-Punk, Dance-Punk, Political Dub, Punk Step, 60s Afro-Garage Techno, Bass Music and beyond, features remixes of Congotronics and a couple of tunes not from the motherland, but surely in keeping with the Afro-Punk spirit. We couldn't thank Erik enough for letting us discover this amazing mix and contacted right away Keith Jones, one of the two directors of the upcoming Punk In Africa movie highlighting the parallels between punk rebellion and the liberation struggle in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and further afield. As a matter of fact, Keith is a big fan of Paris DJs and has been for some time, he frequently plays a couple of Grant Phabao dubs in his own sets, and told us DJ Zhao and himself would be more than pleased to have the mix featured as a guest spot on the site! Matthew Halsall and Nat Birchall - Modal Gondwana

Lexus Blondin Y Sus Afrocubanos present Afro Cubik
A mix of 1950's Cuban-influenced Jazz - Expect Horn Stabs and Spicy Congas Grooves!

For his first appearance on the website, London-based French producer and compiler Lexus Blondin has put together an eclectic, yet very selected mix of Afro cuban jazz. This mix will have you travel back and forth from a pre-revolutionary Havana to a post war New York, a time when record producers were not afraid to think large. Their recipe for a different shade of Bebop? Reptilian brass sections, subtle arrangements written by monuments like Lalo Schiffrin or Chico O' Farril, coupled with the musicianship of talented soloists such as James Moody, Art Blakey, Machito or Cal Tjader. The result was a percussion heavy form of music with which jazz chords and improvisation found a new structure to play around. Four to the floor double bass, swirling trumpet solos, Hard Bop piano chords makes it a delight for Jazz dancers and sample seekers. Beware, this mix is highly explosive, handle with care!

We recently did a focus on Australian label HopeStreet Recordings, reviewing a bunch of 45s from The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra, The Bombay Royale, The Cactus Channel and The Putbacks. Hope Street have been working with a couple of Melbourne's most widely travelled DJs and collectors, about getting some mixes together related to their releases, and asked Paris DJs to help spreading the good word. Here's the first one of those mixes, prepared with love by Ethan Hill aka DJ Manchild who's been sorting out and blending some amazing rarities of Bollywood music circa 1965-1985, all off original vinyl, to showcase the sounds that influence The Bombay Royale and the single Sote Sote Adhi Raat. We played this absolute killer Bolywood disco track in our end of the year Block Party 2011 mix and our Indian honcho Djouls is more than glad to have this special treat up on Paris DJs right on for Valentine's Day! There's also a video of DJ Manchild presenting his 12 favorite Bollywood records to check out… Yep this one's dedicated to all the lovers and music lovers out there. The Real Tuesday Weld - Radio Clerkenwell Paris DJs Mix

The Real Tuesday Weld were formed by Stephen Coates in 1999 inspired by dreams of crooner Al Bowlly and the American actress Tuesday Weld. They're influenced by 1930s jazz, Serge Gainsbourg, Ennio Morricone and minimalist electronica and are known for a series of critically acclaimed albums, arts projects and award winning collaborations with film makers. We started spotting them on Paris DJs way back in 2005… and fast forward to 2012 we were glad to be able to interview Stephen last week (read it in english or in french), and managed to get a mix from him cooked especialy for Paris DJs. The Real Tuesday Weld has a new album out, Songs For The Last Werewolf, and Stephen Coates has also a new project and album out, Lazarus and The Plane Crash. We love his neo-retro 1930s/film noir soundtrack/Beatles vibe spiked with English humor, and can't wait to see the band on stage very soon: February 13th at the Comedy Club and february 15th at the Cafe de La Danse, both in Paris!

Funki Porcini - Accident And Emergence

Ambient/Chill-Out/Downtempo/Eclectic Electronics master James Bradell a.k.a. Funki Porcini has quite a cult following thanks to his 5 albums/15-years long career on Ninja Tune. He's launched in december 2009 his own label, releasing since then no less than 2 albums and 8 singles. His latest album, One Day, has been released just a month ago on funkiporcini.bandcamp.com - and you can stream it entirely there. We got in touch with him last summer, and soon Funki Porcini put himself in a Paris DJs state of mind, and went digging in his crates for this gem of an electronic audio voyage called Accident and Emergence.

Bio Ritmo - Salsa Pa’l Mundo

Did you pass on La Verdad, the latest Bio Ritmo album released at the end of the summer on Electric Cowbell Records? If that's the case, then you've missed the Salsa album of the year, no less. The only letdown of this fantastic and frantic record is its length - under 40 minutes - definitively too short, but explainable by the fact that it's also available on a (heavily recommended) vinyl. Rei Alvarez, one of the main forces of the group, prepared for Paris DJs a mix of his old vinyls, the only kind of records he's got... and a he's got a lot of it!. It's a selection of music that has influenced Bio Ritmo, which doesn't include many tracks from the awesome Fania Records catalog, but rather focuses on its shadows, smaller and independent Salsa music that was released during the 70's and 80's. The one-hour long resulting mix is as killer as the album, with lots of very rare stuff, And we're as honored to have Bio Ritmo onboard of the Paris DJs podcast, as they were to be featured in the latest, Latin issue of Wax Poetics! I think I've already said that, but get the album, you don't hear amazing Salsa with psychedelic hints of ethio jazz, afrobeat or dub that often!!

Radio Citizen - Express Brassmania

From electro-organic funktronica to jazz, soul & afro, Niko Schabel and friends a.k.a. Radio Citizen have already amazed us twice, in 2006 with Berlin Serengeti, and in 2010 with Hope and Despair (both on Ubiquity Records). Niko has been playing a lot live and improvising, with Radio Citizen, the Niko Schabel Quartet, the Express Brass Band and other bands from Germany. He cooked for Paris DJs this very nice brass band mix, with mostly live, unpublished recordings!

Jan Kohlmeyer - Yuletide DJ Mix for Paris DJs

The Paris DJs German connection runs deep in time. Summer 2007 we were inviting Tobias Kirmayer from funk/jazz/afro new releases and reissues label Tramp Records - his Freestyle party mix is still available and has became one of our classics. When we saw he was releasing a Soul and Funk Chistmas compilation this year we couldn't pass on inviting him for our annual xmas mix. Tobias pointed us towards DJ Jan Kohlmeyer from the wild, hot and sexy funk Disco Fantastique parties in Wuerzburg. During 10 years of Disco Fantastique the legendary Christmas parties have become tradition. Being probably unique in Germany, every December Jan Kohlmeyer played several hours of the club night only and exclusively funk and soul Christmas titles all from 45 or vinyl longplayers. He's the one responsible for the selection on the Santa's Funk and Soul Christmas Party compilation out now on Tramp Records, and of course this companion Yuletide Mix!

Al Kent's 60 Minutes French Kiss

Al Kent's reputation for re-editing Disco tracks is just massive. The man has been releasing tons of good stuff in the last ten years, on his on Million Dollar Disco label, on Barely Breaking Even (BBE Records - check his Disco Love compilations), or under his own name or as the Million Dollar Orchestra… He's just one of the Disco kings out there today, so when we stumbled upon the details for this upcoming 5-CD boxset release, The Best of Disco Demands - A Collection Of Rare 1970s Dance Music, which looks like an absolute must-have for Disco lovers, we contacted BBE right away and thanks to their PR girl we managed to get in touch with Al Kent who's knocked down this fantastic Disco mix for the Paris DJs listeners who'll have a perfect one hour mixed selection for their end of the year private parties… The boxest itself (also available as two double vinyls LPs) will be released late january 2012, and our in-depth review should be published very soon (we're eagerly waiting for our copy)…

Nostalgia 77 Relics Three

Between his releases under the Nostalgia 77 name (with a fourth album released earlier this year on Tru Thoughts Recordings, The Sleepwalking Society), collaborative projects such as the afro-jazz of Skeletons, the Afro-Latin of The Rhythmagic Orchestra, or the Funk-Rock of The Broken Keys, producing music for Alice Russell, Lizzy Parks, his own UK jazz label Impossible Ark Records… and a plethora of remixes, Benedic Lamdin just seems unstoppable. He's at the forefront of today's Jazz musicians in the UK while always exploring new styles. His latest album is empowered with overtones of blues and folk, while the remixes available with its singles are digging into the shallows of contemporary electronica.
