Captain Detendu and Djouls - Are Molesting Santa

We know a lot of people enjoyed the Jan Kohlmeyer Yuletide DJ Mix posted early december (very funky!), but that didn't mean we wouldn't also be there for our annual 'Wishing you a stupid Xmas' audio greetings. Every year you know you can count on Captain Detendu (the man from J.E.W.P.O.P.) to spice the Christmas selection with some eccentric carols and Hawaiian jingles. This year's mix is, as usual, full of surprises. We've been digging here, there and everywhere. Hope you'll have as mch fun listening to this one as we had cooking it. Paris DJs Soundsystem - Pomp and Circumstance
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2011-12-18

This one is mainly a warm-up mix in black and white (hence the title and artwork), presenting contemporary and international mento, ska, reggae and dub with young blood and legends. Lee Scratch Perry's got the final and mystic word with his under-exposed last release Rise Again (superbly crafted by Bill Laswell, with Steven Bernstein on trumpet and Bernie Worrell on keys), a title which sounds like a symbol of his great renaissance. But it could also fit The Jolly Boys Great Expectation comeback, a band christened by hellraiser Errol Flynn himself while he was living in Jamaica. Both music and hair dressing connoisseurs will understand easily the play on words hidden in the title's mix. For the others well, they can write to Paris DJs and we'll answer…

Bio Ritmo - Salsa Pa’l Mundo

Did you pass on La Verdad, the latest Bio Ritmo album released at the end of the summer on Electric Cowbell Records? If that's the case, then you've missed the Salsa album of the year, no less. The only letdown of this fantastic and frantic record is its length - under 40 minutes - definitively too short, but explainable by the fact that it's also available on a (heavily recommended) vinyl. Rei Alvarez, one of the main forces of the group, prepared for Paris DJs a mix of his old vinyls, the only kind of records he's got... and a he's got a lot of it!. It's a selection of music that has influenced Bio Ritmo, which doesn't include many tracks from the awesome Fania Records catalog, but rather focuses on its shadows, smaller and independent Salsa music that was released during the 70's and 80's. The one-hour long resulting mix is as killer as the album, with lots of very rare stuff, And we're as honored to have Bio Ritmo onboard of the Paris DJs podcast, as they were to be featured in the latest, Latin issue of Wax Poetics! I think I've already said that, but get the album, you don't hear amazing Salsa with psychedelic hints of ethio jazz, afrobeat or dub that often!!

Radio Citizen - Express Brassmania

From electro-organic funktronica to jazz, soul & afro, Niko Schabel and friends a.k.a. Radio Citizen have already amazed us twice, in 2006 with Berlin Serengeti, and in 2010 with Hope and Despair (both on Ubiquity Records). Niko has been playing a lot live and improvising, with Radio Citizen, the Niko Schabel Quartet, the Express Brass Band and other bands from Germany. He cooked for Paris DJs this very nice brass band mix, with mostly live, unpublished recordings!

Jan Kohlmeyer - Yuletide DJ Mix for Paris DJs

The Paris DJs German connection runs deep in time. Summer 2007 we were inviting Tobias Kirmayer from funk/jazz/afro new releases and reissues label Tramp Records - his Freestyle party mix is still available and has became one of our classics. When we saw he was releasing a Soul and Funk Chistmas compilation this year we couldn't pass on inviting him for our annual xmas mix. Tobias pointed us towards DJ Jan Kohlmeyer from the wild, hot and sexy funk Disco Fantastique parties in Wuerzburg. During 10 years of Disco Fantastique the legendary Christmas parties have become tradition. Being probably unique in Germany, every December Jan Kohlmeyer played several hours of the club night only and exclusively funk and soul Christmas titles all from 45 or vinyl longplayers. He's the one responsible for the selection on the Santa's Funk and Soul Christmas Party compilation out now on Tramp Records, and of course this companion Yuletide Mix!

Al Kent's reputation for re-editing Disco tracks is just massive. The man has been releasing tons of good stuff in the last ten years, on his on Million Dollar Disco label, on Barely Breaking Even (BBE Records - check his Disco Love compilations), or under his own name or as the Million Dollar Orchestra… He's just one of the Disco kings out there today, so when we stumbled upon the details for this upcoming 5-CD boxset release, The Best of Disco Demands - A Collection Of Rare 1970s Dance Music, which looks like an absolute must-have for Disco lovers, we contacted BBE right away and thanks to their PR girl we managed to get in touch with Al Kent who's knocked down this fantastic Disco mix for the Paris DJs listeners who'll have a perfect one hour mixed selection for their end of the year private parties… The boxest itself (also available as two double vinyls LPs) will be released late january 2012, and our in-depth review should be published very soon (we're eagerly waiting for our copy)…

Nostalgia 77 Relics Three

Between his releases under the Nostalgia 77 name (with a fourth album released earlier this year on Tru Thoughts Recordings, The Sleepwalking Society), collaborative projects such as the afro-jazz of Skeletons, the Afro-Latin of The Rhythmagic Orchestra, or the Funk-Rock of The Broken Keys, producing music for Alice Russell, Lizzy Parks, his own UK jazz label Impossible Ark Records… and a plethora of remixes, Benedic Lamdin just seems unstoppable. He's at the forefront of today's Jazz musicians in the UK while always exploring new styles. His latest album is empowered with overtones of blues and folk, while the remixes available with its singles are digging into the shallows of contemporary electronica. When we stumbled upon the World's Funkiest Covers compilation just released on US label Cultures of Soul Records, we exclaimed: 'Damn! Those cats have really been Molesting Laura the Paris DJs way!!'. Their selection, available on CD and glorious vinyl, carefully selected by DJ Deano Sounds, features indeed some of the funkiest covers from around the world and throughout time, from deep funk to latin soul, hard salsa, soul, afro beat, and even cumbia. Il Cinema Secondo Calibro 35

Adesso parliamo italiano… from our strong italian connection comes Calibro 35's founder and mastermind Tommaso Colliva. Tommaso explains in our exclusive interview that he's been a diehard italian soundtrack collector since he was a teen. Then he had the fine idea to bring together great italian musicians and play covers from the maestri (Gianni Ferrio, Bruno Nicolai, Ennio Morricone, etc.) as well as writing compositions inspired by these mentors. The funkiest italian act Calibro 35 was born. For Il cinema secondo Calibro 35 (cinema according to Calibro 35), he's selected his favorite tracks ever to cook the ultimate polizieschi (italian noir movie) mix and unveiled the influences and backgound of Calibro 35's sound. As the famous joke says, "Italians do it better", and it's never been so true!

Loka - The Daily Bread

Loka's discography isn't hard to follow. All of this psychedelic jazz band's records have been released on leading UK label Ninja Tune. It all started with an exclusive, cinematic, trippy track on the label's 10-year anniversary collection Xen Cuts in 2000. Then 4 years later the band released their first single, the marvelous Beginningless, proving once more that Ninja Tune was THE 21st century jazz label at the time. 6 months passed before Loka re-imagined a Blockhead track, Sunday Seance, as a flurry of drums and gorgeous stringiness. Their first album, Fire Shepherds arrives in 2006 and it's just one of the best of the year. In 2007 founding member Karl Webb (formerly from one of our favorite bands, Super Numeri) splits with the group, leaving Mark Kyriacou (keyboards, electronics and compositions) to team up with members of Loka's live band. A new (digital) 3-track single is planned for november 21st, with the band's second album Passing Place to be released the following week. More than 5 years after the first opus, this new recording is another fantastic piece of epic and cinematic UK jazz, which we're celebrating by inviting Loka for this timeless mix, The Daily Bread, cooked exclusively for Paris DJs. A big thanks goes to Ninja Tune's French promo agency, Ping Pong, who hooked us up with Loka for this!! Now let's hope Loka will get to play live in France...

Phish are regularly celebrating Halloween with what they call a musical costume, with the band performing an entire album by another artist and including it as the second of three sets. That's how they came to perform The Beatles' White Album, The Who's Quadrophenia, the Talking Heads' Remain in Light, The Velvet Underground's Loaded, Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon or The Rolling Stones' Exile on Main Street!! For this year's halloween celebration, we've decided that Phish would be the one molesting our dear Laura, with an astounding selection of live covers chosen by psychedelic music expert Mr. Moo.

In the interview we've just published, British pianist Greg Foat explains he's also DJing in great cities around the world, so we've thought he would be very natural contributor DJ to our great mix series. And indeed he's dug in his fine vinyl collection to cook an exclusive mix he introduces like this:
"The Sci-Fi Bugalu Mix is basically a fun party mix with a touch of sci-fi weirdness. There's a lot of classic soul jazz tracks, a couple of deep funk and crossover tracks, a bit of westcoast and some British library! It's pretty much all uptempo dancers, it's a kind of nostalgic mix to remind me of when I used to DJ out this on vinyl and dance like mad in the late 90's! I also have a lot of fond memories hunting down these records in junk shops, thrift stores, charity shops and record stores".

Medline - Al Ritmo Del Bump Bump

The latin hit Al Ritmo Del Bump Bump is originally inspired by the Soulful Strut instrumental from Young-Holt Unlimited. It was recently getting attention again with the Otto De Rojas Y Los Ultra 76's reissue on the Deja Vu label. In the mix you will hear another cover from Luciano Luciani. French beatmaker Medline has found more versions by others Peruvian bands from the same period, on which Soulful Strut evolves into a totally new dancing style thru the hand of those latin artists. It was for Medline a good pretext to give freshness to his favorite theme making his own version too. The mix was already available on Mixcloud for a few weeks, and this is the fully remastered version by Grant Phabao.

AM and Shawn Lee - Paris DJs Betamix

Fine songwriter AM and funkateer Shawn Lee have just released a psychedelic electro-soul record called Celestial Electric on ESL music, loaded with killer tunes. The album was conceived between London and Los Angeles, AM and Shawn Lee sending files to each other until they were happy with the result. Anthony Joseph - The Rubber Orchestras Paris DJs Mix Part 1: From the Plantation to the Revolution

A selection of sounds from Anthony Joseph to accompany the release of his third album with the Spasm Band, Rubbers Orchestras. 'Featuring some vintage soca, calypso, steelpan, psychedelic funk, and voodoo jazz; some surprises, some real rarities, some classics, some discoveries', says the British poet, novelist, musician and lecturer born in Trinidad. We had already invited Anthony Joseph for a guest mix on Paris DJs in december 2008, to announce his previous album Bird Head Son. The new one is even more amazing, this time produced by Malcom Catto, who doesn't need any better introduction than the psychedelic funk mix focusing on his works, which we published three years ago already. This new album is out september 12th, and Anthony Joseph will be playing at the New Morning in Paris on september 15th. Tip!

DJ Center comes from the now heavy Paris DJs Brooklyn connection. I had discovered him through his former band, Open Thought, way back in 2003... It was a 12 inch called Force of Life, which never left my bag since then. Always a pleasure to play and definitively a killer track. You will find some more very cool stuff in DJ Center's first album, a mostly hip hop global thing called Everything In Time, released on CD in 2010 and on glorious vinyl earlier this year (surely some more coolness will also appear in the upcoming Everything In Time Remixed album). We are definitely humbled and excited to offer DJ Center an opportunity to share his experience in spreading good music made with a lot of love. As the song goes, groove is in the heart.

Paris DJs Soundsystem - This is Kiwi Music - Pacific Sounds from New Zealand

The world stares at New Zealand as the Rugby World Cup begins on September 9th. The All Blacks try again to win a trophy they miss since the first edition of the Cup in 1987. But Aotearoa ('The Long White Cloud', New Zealand in Māori) is not only a great country for rugby, it's also a great country for music, especially its first-class electronica-reggae-dub scene located in Wellington (Trinity Roots, Fat Freddy's Drop, The Yoots, Benny Tones, The Black Seeds...). Funny-and-folk duo Flight Of The Conchords is famous worldwide with its HBO series, while the NZ diaspora is represented by young psychedelic-pop Connan Mockasin and The Bamboos' producer and guitarist Lance Ferguson (Lanu). Lanu's grandfather (Bill Wolfgramm, an hawaiian-style guitarist) became the first NZ musician to release a vinyl-format album in New Zealand in the 50's. Here is a fine selection that captures the essence of the smooth, inspired, original and peaceful kiwi music.

Paris DJs Soundsystem presents Steven Bernstein - A Trumpet's Life pt.1

I distinctly remember discovering Steven Bernstein's incredible trumpet playing and arranging through one of his bands, Sex Mob and their album Din of Inequity, which included some John Medeski featurings and hard-to-believe covers of Prince, John Barry, Paul McCartney and a few others. It was the end of the 90s and France was as lost musically as it is today, with musical ignorance reigning supreme. Things have been slowly evolving thanks to independent medias such as Paris DJs (and djouls.com before) who always had the will to defend incredible artists you've quite never heard of. So here's the first part of our introduction to this amazing musican and arranger, a 40mn eclectic jazz mix, out there and for everyone at the same time... We've also published an interview (in english or french); we can't urge you enough not to miss the Sly Stone tribute show in Paris on sept 11, opening for Medeski, Martin and Wood; we'll publish the second part of this mix in a month, right on spot for the release of the new album MTO plays Sly; and Steven Bernstein should back later this year for a third mix cooked by the man himself - how's that for an introduction?

Some of our listeners might remember a high-quality selection of new and unreleased Funk, Soul and Latin flavoured tunes, mixed by The Captain from Resense Records, aired early 2009 on Paris DJs. "The crux of Moroccan music is trance. Trance as a quality in music has always attracted me, whether it's an extended James Brown cut, or something by Fela or Steve Reich. Club d'Elf has just released a new and stunning double-album, Electric Moroccoland/So Below (Face Pelt), where jazz, freeform improvisation, rock psychedelia, glitchy turntablism and North African trance melt in one single cauldron. An Introduction to The Hifivers

Hidden Orchestra - Outlook Festival Mixtape

This new and third incredible Hidden Orchestra mix doesn't fit in the same bag as the Footsteps or Night Walks On Vinyl mixtapes previously offered on Paris DJs. It's more of a 140 BPM beats kind of affair cooked especially to announce Hidden Orchestra's upcoming live gig at the Outlook Festival 2011 in Croatia this september, Europe's largest bass music and soundsystem culture festival!!

Having shared stages with names like Bonobo, Aim, The Bays and Gilles Peterson it's about time Outlook got this interesting Scottish Band down. Combing jazz with cinematic emotions the four piece band draw influence from Radiohead, Madlib, Aphex Twin and Squarepusher. As well as two live drummers the band trigger live samples and use live instrumentation on Cello and Brass. Their debut album Night Walks was funded by the Scottish Arts Council and features guest appearances from distinguished Scottish musicians. Released on Brighton based label Tru Thoughts, Night Walks shows off energetic originality unlike any other band.

You might remember Tobias Kirmayer's label Tramp Records, and especially the fantastic Hungarian jazz, funk and afro from The Qualitons, a Budapest collective assembled by DJ/producer Kanadakaosz, inspired by bands such as The Whitefield Brothers... Their 2010 album, Panoramic Tymes, is an incendiary blend of funk, afro, 60's beat and garage rock grooves, mostly intrumental with a couple of vocal tunes, which we cannot advise you enough to buy it on vinyl before it's sold out! After a first introductory mix, DJ Kanadakaosz, who's also a member of the DJ/digger team specialized in hungarian records Budapest BrakeCsokkerz, is back with this amazing mix of vintage Hungarian Psybeat from the 60s and the 70s, and I'm quite certain you've never heard this before!!

In 2008 Jazzman records released Away with Melancholy, a fantastic first record from a mysterious band called The Natural Yogurt Band. Actually the band was a Nottingham (UK) duo formed by Wayne Fullwood (drums, bass) and Miles Newbold (keyboards, flute, vibes and other unusual instruments). This indescribable and cult album sounded like a jamband, psychedelic movie soundtracks and acid jazz simultaneously. Three years later The Natural Yogurt Band is back with Tuck In With... They loved our previous mixes on the same theme (vol.1 and vol.2) - "Those first two volumes are super-dope, we are fans of your stuff as well, that's really nice work on the Black Cat mixtape. I'd be honored to throw a volume 3 together!" said Keith Foster from Big Pimp Jones. His mix is fun & funky, keeping the 21st century blaxploitation soundtrack spirit high on the wah wah vibe, 70s-style, while selecting a lof of Paris DJs favorites, you should love this!

Seun Anikulapo Kuti - World People #01

Seun Anikulapo Kuti, the youngest son of Fela, is now in his late 20s. He grew up in Kalukaluta, Nigeria, and we asked him about his musical background during the 80s and the 90s… "It was all about Afrobeat! Traditional music also, and reggae. Bob Marley of course, Peter Tosh too, he was a huge favorite of mine.", says Seun. He made this selection for Paris DJs as a snapshot of what he's listening to these days: dancehall, hip hop, afrobeat, reggae, and a Ray Charles classic… Seun Kuti is currently touring Europe to promote his superb second album From Africa with Fury: Rise.

Paris DJs Soundsystem and Musiques Impures present Adrian Quesada's Spring Reverb

The Echocentrics is a new project of psychedelic, cinematic and dusty soul produced by Adrian Quesada of Brownout/Ocote Soul Sounds/Grupo Fantasma fame. Loads of spring reverb, psyched out farfisa organs and heavy drums are accented by beautiful vocals sung in English, Spanish and Portuguese by Tita Lima from Brazil and Natalia Clavier from Argentina. The album is out on Ubiquity Records. Grant Phabao, without any doubt the greatest reggae producer in the world today, has already two skanking remixes on their way... while Adrian Quesada is preparing on his side some remixes for Phabao's upcoming album with The Jays, Stepping up In Time. Something's happening here! We did this collaborative mix about Adrian Quesada with fellow blogger Nicolas Ragonneau of Musiques Impures fame, where he selected the album tracks and I completed with some rare stuff and remixes. He's specialized in 8-12 hours long sets to shake your booty to all nite long... Tom has also founded the Booty Shakers DJs crew, and A Rede do Suingue, a worldwide network of Brazilian DJs. He's the resident DJ of the Avenida Brasil parties in Paris with Remy Kolpa Kopoul (Radio Nova), of the Rua Carioca ones... and also the official DJ for the parisian Samba Schools! The man comes from Athens, Greece, is the founder of the Cast-a-Blast label, and an active DJ/producer/remixer all over Europe. Cast-a-Blast is a label we have a lot of faith in at Paris DJs headquarters: we already played 4 tracks from this label in different mixes!
