Info :

The idea to make this podcast struck me when I heard that Winter Olympic Games in 2014 would take place in Sochi. There is a record in my collection which is called "Sochi". It is dedicated to this wonderful resort in the South of Russia. Well, Sochi status has changed to a would-be olympic capital now. The opening track in the mix is a song in Spanish recorded by a cuban singer Lourdes Gil together with the cinematographic orchestra of the USSR directed by Silantyev. The rest of the mix is compiled of records released by 'Melodia' over the years, including discs that were made just before the Olympic Games '80 in Moscow.

Loik - Bizot Is The One
Loik - Bizot Is The One
(MP3 Podcast on www.parisdjs.com) Kraked, 2007-12-13

A small tribute to the immense Jean-Francois :
Bizot notre pape de la contre culture, fondateur d'Actuel et de Radio Nova, nous a quitte il y a quelques mois et la vie n'est plus pareille. Ses coup de gueule, ses entousiasmes, sa liberte d'etre et ses visions nous manquent deja cruellement. A l'occasion d'un Mensomadaire special, j'en profite juste pour lui jouer quelques songs qu'il affectionnait, de la musique pour lui. Pour lui dire qu'il nous manque!

Grant Phabao and Djouls - 21st Century Roots Vol.4
Grant Phabao and Djouls - 21st Century Roots Vol.4
(MP3 Podcast on ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C., 2007-11-18

Info :
A few months have gone by with only one or two new mixes appearing over here but thankfully, we haven't received much complaints yet. After this nearly-hiatus period, we're glad to announce we're back with bags and bags and bags of new records to play. Beside our usual record-digging over-activity, cool labels like Tru Thoughts, Ubiquity, Freestyle, Melting Pot, First Word, Ropeadope, Sonar Kollektiv, Les Disques du Telegraphe or T.I.M.E.C. have been sending us some incredible stuff recently, and we cannot thank them all nearly enough.

Things start heating up with a '21st Century Roots Vol.4', carefully selected by one of our most persistent DJs, Djouls, and especially blended by the number 1 french soundmaster, Grant Phabao, whose MP3s might sound better than your WAVs... As you might already know, this series focuses on reggae-tinted music that's been produced after the year 2000. Expect a tight selection of roots reggae, jamaican funk and dub - perfectly fit all the lazy iPod smokers out there. The Mr Vegas vs Grant Phabao bootleg is 100 percent exclusive and we'd love to get more info on The Flying Customs band/group/artist (??) who sent us this back-to-the-roots marvel...

Coming soon, a serie of 3 new Molesting Laura mixes for all lovers of surprising covers...

Paris DJs Soundstem - African Mashed Potato Popcorn Vol.6
Paris DJs Soundstem - African Mashed Potato Popcorn Vol.6
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C., 2007-10-15

Info :
African music is shining on ParisDJs.com, with this already 6th (!) volume of our African Mashed Potato Popcorn series, carefully crafted by our loyal co-founders Grant Phabao and Djouls from the T.I.M.E.C. music agency. Those guys have been digging for rare and trippy african grooves for many years now, and after a relaxed 'Afrocool' selection (Vol.4) and a roof-tearing-off 'Afrogroove' one (Vol.5), they've opted this time for a special psychedelic mashup of afro-trips from all over the world.
Things kick off on a surprising extract from Miami's top-ranking Latin maestros The Spam Allstars, an incredible mixture of styles called 'Afrika' - off the grid and perfectly fit for this mix. Next comes The Rhythm Funk Masters, another band you've probabaly never heard of, they come from Finland and have released an essential melting pot of Afrofunk on the Japanese P-Vine label. Distributors should fight for this record...
Hydroponic Sound System is the hub of production team/lab rats Rube and Skin from Dallas, Texas. 'Shu Bop Shu Bop' is extracted from their self-released second album from 2005. Those guys have issued so many records and digital tracks that they're really hard to follow and categorize, but the chase's nearly always worth the effort.
New Yorkers' Bama and The Family 'Feeling Good' track was originally released of a 7 inch on the Afro-styled Soul Fire subsidiary label Lenar. Both labels are closed now but in 2004 Leon Michels (from El Michels Affair) and Jeff Silverman (from Soul Fire Records) formed Truth and Soul Records in Brooklyn, NY, who's been ever since releasing (and re-releasing) new classic tracks of retro soul, funk and afro-funk.
We then go back to Germany at the end of the nineties with the godfathers of deep funk, namely The Poets Of Rhythm, under the Pan-Atlantics moniker. Check their incredible discography on Ninja-Obsession.net. The longest track on this mix is from Euforquestra, an eclectic world-beat jamband from Iowa City, who tried mixing afrobeat and roots cuban music on their 'Explorations in Afrobeat' album issued in 2006. And closing this superb and hypnotic set is 'Pharaoh', extracted from the rather hard to find third album from Topaz, 'Afro-Dub Sessions'. They're from Austin, Texas and add the to this demonstration that, from all over the globe, Afrobeat rules!

Tracklisting :
01. The Spam Allstars - Afrika
(from 'Electricodomesticos' album, 2007 / Spamusica) USA
02. Rhythm Funk Masters - Nudinuff
(from 'Afro-american-arctic' CD, 2007 / P-Vine) FINLAND

Info :
Monsieur Ash and one of his record collector friends have contacted us offering this "Jerk 45" selection for Paris DJs. Their mix is a pot-pourri of French and European 70s sounds that they digged during the year 2005, with a lot of editing, cut'n'paste-style. This is the second part of the mix. The first part is still available...

(bootleg CD/MP3 Podcast on ParisDJs.com) Soul T'ing CDSTEINNOTH, 2007-06-22

Info :
I sincerily hope you've heard about the man Steinski before, through his famous megamixes with Double Dee ["The Payoff Mix", "Lesson 2 (The James Brown Mix)", "Lesson 3 (The History Of Hiphop)", "Jazz"], through his releases with Mass Media ["The Motorcade Sped On", "We'll Be Right Back", "Let's Play It Cool", "It's Up To You"]. Those were incredible, exceptional and amazing cut'n'paste bombs launched during the 80s and the 90s. If you haven't heard these, it's still high time to educate yourselves. Thankfully, they're all available out there in blogs, on the p2p and such...

Steinski is indeed one of the pioneers of sample-based breaks mixes that have been flourishing with the advent of file-spreading. I've had the chance to meet him in Paris during his Red Bull Academy course, thanks to Fred Elalouf's Ping Pong agency, and when I contacted him to come and join the Paris DJs party, he got hooked with the concept of 30 mn thematic mixes right away. He offered us to put up one of his past mixes to advertise the new one he'll especially cook for for us in a few months time!

We've chosen to re-play the "Nothing To Fear - A Rough Mix" program he had done for Coldcut's legendary Solid Steel Radio show from a few years back. The mix has been bootleged on CD and vinyl at the time. We've split it in two parts and had Grant Phabao mastering it for mp3 podcasting. Here's the second half. Enjoy!

Info (english) :
Latin-American rhythms have always been fascinating and widely spread across the world. And the Soviet Union was no exception. It's quite possible to say that in the former times, USSR had lowered the iron curtain to let all that cultural information slip through, and it was perceived in the right way. Many records, soundtracks to soviet films were influenced a lot by those Latin-American rhythms. Here you can easily spot the cortege of the carnival samba or afro-cuban flavors, sometimes it's even hard to believe that all of that was recorded in the snowy Moscow, in Caucasus, somewhere near the Baltic sea, and a really old movie with a rhythmical samba of the 70th accidentally played on TV was shot somewhere in Crimea.
The uniqueness of the provided material lies in what is called the "globalization of music", when for example we come across a soviet versions of compositions made by Gershwin, Mendes, Deodato, national songs of Latin America, which were originally recovered and recomposed by people living on the other side of the continent. For example by Russians, Jews, Georgians, Armenians, Uzbeks, Latvians and Estonians the nations which are quite unfamiliar with Latin-American culture. Isn't that really a multinational thing?
Without a doubt, we must refer this fact to a positive process of the dialogue civilisations and look at this cultural layer as a heritage of an ex, in former times - unified soviet culture. And besides, it is not supposed to consider those processes from a viewpoint of some kind of special, integrant power of the Soviet Union, or as a mighty, not long ago, geopolitical unit or a commonly revolutional opinion in Latin America and USSR. Everything is pretty simple. For example, a lot of the presented artists in the podcast are just really good friends of my family and close relatives, who, as us, used to meet with each other and play or listen to good music. Info :
Sorry for the hectic updates, and don't worry, many special mixes are scheduled for the upcoming summer... starting with this 7th volume of the 'Molesting Laura' series.
Those following the story from the beginning might have understood by now that when T.I.M.E.C. honchos Grant Phabao and Djouls are 'Molesting Laura', it can mean EITHER that they're going into a latin music frenzy, OR that they're plunging into the deep world of covers, bootlegs, parodies and rare remixes... That's the case here, with an EXCLUSIVE bootie of Cee-Lo's 'The One' (of Gnarls Barkley fame - check our Cee-Lo mix) acapella over a Grant Phabao instrumental. This has been sent to us through the p2p from the Booty Smash Soundsystem, who wish to keep their identity under wraps... We've also took the liberty of playing the Ty remix our dubmeister did last year, which was only available here for 24h! Don't say thank you yet, cos' you'll also get some tasty covers of the Stranglers, Marvin Gaye, the Jackson 5, George Harrison, the Strokes and many more... (ok now you can say 'Hoorray!')

Snap Ant - In Dark Three's
Snap Ant - In Dark Three's...
(MP3 podcast on www.parisdjs.com) Snap Ant, 2007-03-11

Info :
Ever heard of Snap Ant?
He plays bass and kalimba with Ninja Tune's UK psychedelic masters Super Numeri, with Pop Levi and Karl Webb from Loka (check their discography). If you haven't heard them yet it's still high time!
Snap Ant also released a very cool sample-free psychedelic pop album, "This Is Jut!" on Invicta Hi-Fi Records in October 2005 (read my review).
He remixed Ladytron and Coldcut.
He started a pop band called Maude, with Lynsey Packman and Linus Jackson (download their free online EP).
With Super Numeri he released in september 2005 a mind-blowing mix, "The Enochian Way", a crazy mash-up of various psychedelic stuff from all ages, one of the best compilations of 2005 (check the tracklist).
When he contacted us with this new 28mn psychedelic mashed-up mix, we were delighted, enthousiastic, jumping around, kinda like kids with a new toy: basically, we're proud to introduce the amazing world of Snap Ant to you today.
Enjoy.
