Grant Phabao and Djouls - 21st Century Afro Spectacular Vol.2

Grant Phabao and Djouls - 21st Century Afro Spectacular Vol.2
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-04-29

Afrobeat is a form of music that's already been perfected and there are many bands who are just trying to attain that, most of the time writing their own compositions which reflect their own influences. Sometimes they'll play a Cuban clave or something else which somehow or other still fits. So unless Fela comes back to them and says Don't play Afrobeat, they're gonna keep on doing it. Here's our second spectacular selection of new cool afro grooves from some of those bands, with a second exclusive track from the Grant Phabao Afrobeat Arkestra, to be released on a limited 7 inch in september, friendly vibes from Adrian Quesada (remixing Vieux Farka Touré or producing The Funk Ark), Chico Mann, Mr Confuse, Seun Kuti, Hard Proof, Anthony Joseph, Ticklah (producing Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars), The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra, Doctor L and Kiala, more friendly vibes sent by our label collegues from Jack To Phono, Electric Cowbell, ESL Music, Ubiquity, Jazz&Milk, BBE Music or Names You Can Trust, and, of course, some thingies we grabbed here and there. 21st Century Afrobeat, Afrofunk, Afrolatin and Ethio grooves from all over the world, selected by Djouls, mixed and fully mastered by Grant Phabao. Do you want more? Did you already get our 21st Century Afro Extravaganza and the first volume of our 21st Century Afro Spectacular?

Paris DJs Soundsystem - Election Mix Pt.1

Paris DJs Soundsystem - Election Mix Part 1
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-04-21

Tomorrow (sunday, april 22nd) will the first round of the French presidential election. After 5 years of monarchy with Nicolas Sarkozy, who managed to bring down the 5th republic, destroy France's influence and credibility in the rest of the world, and install a climate of fear in his own country, it has became essential for everyone to VOTE FOR A CHANGE. Yes you heard that before ('since 54' as legendary Jamaican artist Carlton Livingston would rhyme) but it's really important that France may know who it is and that abstention may be as low as possible. Don't believe the press who says that leftists extremists are refusing reality, it's a lie: as a famous poet once said, Reality Is A Viewpoint, so don't let anyone impose his vision of reality on top of your own. The majority of French people wants to get rid of the wanabee George Bush who's been running the show for the last 5 years. François Hollande's Socialist Party is a center-right one as much as François Bayrou's Modem, though he might be the best chance to beat the current midget king - those who watch Game of Thrones will get the pun. Jean-Luc Melenchon and its Left Front Coalition has been the most dynamic figure in an otherwise dull campaign. But don't even let all this really influence your vote. Try voting with your heart and not with tactics in mind. Well, don't try voting. Just fucking vote.

Phil Meadley - Eastern Bloc Rockin Beats DJ Mix
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-04-17

Nascente’s global funk train arrives in Eastern Europe with the release of Eastern Bloc Funk Experience: Psych-Funk, Satellite Soul and Cold War Disco. Having visited the warmer climes of Brazil, Cuba, Caribbean, South Africa and beyond with selectors like Andy Smith, Quantic and Hugo Mendez (Sofrito) on board, Nascente arrives behind the iron curtain and serves up a revelatory new experience.  On this mix put together exclusively for Paris DJs, album compiler Phil Meadley features some of the best tracks from the compilation.
Don't believe the lies you've been reading for so many years; the West was feeding you merciless propaganda! The truth must finally be revealed... Funk was born in the USSR. It was first played and sung by the Red Army Choir in Moscow's Red Square, and after that toured Warsaw, Prague, Budapest, and East Berlin. This CD tells a story that has never been told before; the story of Eastern Bloc Funk. Yuriy Gurzhy (Russendisko)

Paris DJs Soundsystem - Bag of Goodies Vol.6

Paris DJs Soundsystem - Bag Of Goodies Vol.6
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-04-09

The march 2012 Bag of Goodies selection by Djouls and Loik is one for the dancers, soulful and full of breaks. Tel-Aviv funksters The Apples are back with a new album on Audio Montage - check our Israeli Funk Mix for more on that scene - and the first single Thang is a killer one, also available on a limited 7 inch… Next we have The Funk Ark, an afrobeat/afrolatin funk band from Washington DC. Their new album High Noon is produced by our friend Adrian Quesada and is one of the must-have of this spring! The latest from Italian soundtracks-obsessed Calibro 35 is just plain amazing and we could have played many other bombing tracks than the Uh Ah Barr we've picked… We've been spreading the gospel about this band for months, info, mix and interview are available here. Souleance, aka Fulgeance + Soulist don't need any introduction to our faithful readers, but their first album is finally out and the duo's eclectic groovism could not be avoided in our selection. Full review here. The Black Seeds come from Wellington, New Zealand. Their fusion of dub, funk, afrobeat and soul is reaching its peak with their latest album, Dust And Dirt. We might have a video interview of the band coming soon in these pages… San Francisco based band Monophonics will soon release a new album on Ubiquity Records, on the fuzzy psych side of soul and funk, and we've featured here their deeply soulful 7 inch scheduled for record store day, There's A Riot Going On. This one should fly off the shelves quite fast. We've also played some hip hop and garage rock you can download for free, from San Francisco's Innovative Leisure 2012 Sampler. You can grab this utterly cool goodie here, with fantastic tracks from Allah-Las, Nick Waterhouse, Mexicans With Guns or Hanni El Khatib… This is definitively a new label to follow, and we will. We've also came back to an album released in 2010, from Austin, Texas. The first opus from Afrobeat band Hard Proof is indeed one of the best 21st century afro thing we've heard recently, and they're currently working on their 2nd with Adrian Quesada. Adrian is kinda all over this mix, with a track from the upcoming new Brownout LP closing this session. We'll be back about this superb new latin funk album with a rock edge very soon… but back to this mix with Jakarta records in Germany, a label we discovered with Blitz The Ambassador. We contacted them about the upcoming release of afro/ethio band from New-Zealand Shogun Orchestra (to be featured on Paris DJs later on this week) and they sent us a magical soulful/hip hop/indie album from Mancini and The Creepers that we've been playing on repeat. Truly unique. We'll conclude this introduction with The Cheebacabra from Seattle, and his acidulated instrumental funk with crisp head-nodding hip hop beats and lots of analog synths. He's just released his third album, Pass The information, available on glorious vinyl and reviewed here. All in all, this spring's batch of new releases is quite fabulous and we hope next month's Bag of Goodies selection will be as exciting as this one!

Sandra Nkaké & Jî Dru - Inspirations

Sandra Nkake and Ji Dru - Inspirations - "A Travel Inside Nothing For Granted" Vol.1
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2011-04-04

It took us a year to conceive, write and produce Nothing For Granted, Sandra Nkake's new album, home-made songs that tell individual and collective fates that meet. A new album is an instant. It's a new fire to lighten up. We felt the urge to share the ideas, state of mind, direction and energy we express everyday to redefine our destiny. Here's some of the music we listened to between takes, in the car, on holidays, after the mix, in the street. A musical journey through what fed our fire. (Ji Dru and Sandra Nkake)
