Jan Kohlmeyer - Yuletide DJ Mix IV for Paris DJs (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2015-12-15 For more than a decade, Tramp Records has been regularly feeding music obsessives and record collectors in the soul/funk/jazz scene with tasteful new releases and high-quality reissues. One thing's for sure, those cats know how to dig and are one of the best music filters out there! Their approach is always very respectful of the buyers and of the artists, with lots of info & artworks. And when they hunt for the obscure and the rarity, they always look out for virtue in music, not hype. A few years back, the German label started an amazing trilogy of Xmas compilations which came to and end this year with the release of the superb 'Santa's Funk & Soul Christmas Party Vol.3' —which you can gab on vinyl or CD on tramprecords.bandcamp.com. For each volume in this series, we invited compiler Jan Kohlmeter (a.k.a. Disco Fantastique) to cook a special mix with many extracts from his new record and many other bits of soulful and hip-shaking Xmas tunes. So here's his new merry holidays contribution delivered directly to your mp3 player, and if you're in need of more Xmas music, check the Paris DJs archives, with no less than 13 other cool selections published in the last 10 years. Rodinia - Asteroid Mix (German Space-Rock Classics) (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2015-11-30 How many articles and mixes have we published related to bands such as The Poets of Rhythm, The Whitefield Brothers or Karl Hector and The Malcouns? If you've been following Paris DJs for some time, the name J. Whitefield should at least ring a bell. He's one of the great musicians/producers of our time, based in Munich, Germany. His latest project is called Rodinia, with saxophonist and keyboardist Johannes Schleiermacher (Woima Collective, International Ducks, Onom Agemo and The Disco Jumpers) they've recorded a first album titled 'Drumside Dreamside', released this fall on Now-Again Records. The album is divided in two parts — one for each side of the vinyl of course — a psychedelic krautrock half followed by a trippy ambient one. A perfect record to lay down in an horizontal dreamy state. To celebrate this release, he cooked a mix of German space-rock classics, which some of you may already have heard on Now-Again's soundcloud page (here-). Here's the Grant Phabao-mastered version of this mix for you to download, superbly illustrated by French designer Ben Hito. Tracklisting : 01. Gila - Intro 02. Agitation Free - Haunted Island (from '2nd' album, 1973 / Vertigo) 03. Missus Beastly - Geisha (from 'Missus Beastly' album, 1974 / NOVA) 04. Et Cetera - Raga Pt. 2 (from 'Et Cetera' album, 1971 / Global) 05. Gila - Kommunikation (from 'Gila' album, 1971 / BASF) 06. Missus Beastly - Nothing Again (excerpt) (from 'Dr. Aftershave And The Mixed-Pickles' album, 1976 / April) 07. Embryo - A Place To Go (from 'Rocksession' album, 1973 / Brain) 08. Guru Guru - The Meaning Of Meaning (from 'Hinten' album, 1971 / Ohr) 09. Exmagma - Tango Wolperaiso (from 'Goldball' album, 1975 / Urus) 10. Annexus Quam - A (from 'Osmose' album, 1970 / Ohr) 11. Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1972 - Standards, Versions and Revamps Vol.13 (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2015-11-05 1972 was a great year for music. Most 1972 albums in artists discographies are really good ones. Artists such as Bobby Gentry had many country/soul crossover hits in the US in the previous years and influenced many others. Well that's what we felt as quite obvious while preparing this selection. But don't worry, we've kept it as funky and soulful as ever - Paris DJs' style. Excepted that we added this time a track-by-track commentary. We like our podcasts thorough.

Paris DJs Soundsystem presents Some Of The Best Things In Life Are Free Vol.7 (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2015-08-31 While we're trying to move heaven & earth for our 15 CDs crowdfunding campaign, we don't forget that sometimes some of the best things are life are totally free and need no 'help me fund my project' shout-outs all over. Hence this new volume of our ongoing series of mixes focusing on free download tracks we've been able to find on the web recently… starting with Paris-based MC RacecaR who's new album should drop early next year. The man is just the coolest - Dude-like category. We then head to Spain and reggae/ska band Pura Mandanga, remixed by new Chilean cumbia band Chico Trujillo, for a very very nice piece of international cumbia soul. After a short trip back to the early 70s thanks to a Numero Group funk/soul reissue from Chicago funk band Boscoe, we transport back to Europe, Manchester in the UK to be precise, and a deeply funky hip hop joint from The Mouse Outfit, featuring Bam from The Jungle Brothers! The trip then takes us to Denver, Colorado, via Paris, France, with a new tasty Grant Phabao reggae remix, of Afro/Funk band Atomga this time. Washington, D.C.'s The Funk Ark is next with P-Funk number with some Middle Easter flavor. Fantastic stuff to fly out to, and indeed we land in Australia afterwards, with superb salsa dura from Melbourne's Quarter Street! The voyage is far over. Next is French producer Ajax Tow, reworking a soul ballad written by Marvin Gaye and Anna Gordy Gaye, produced by Marvin and recorded and released by American Motown vocal group The Originals for the Soul label in 1969. And… we go back to Australia, with a beautiful vocal soul 45 from Zillanova, before taking the express route to Israel, for some global polyrhythmic dish from George & The Good Vibes. Teleportation soon becomes necessary, directly to Ottawa and the ever-amazing groove machine that is The Souljazz Orchestra, before landing in Ghent, with Belgium party brass band Brazzmatazz!!! We hope you enjoyed your travel and will be back aboard our earlines soon. Tracklisting : 01. Mr Moo - Abstractions In Space (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2015-07-01 What really happened after the 90's? Past the electronic revolution, once all the freaks fled the overpriced cities, between the last gasp of experience and the last band standing in the minefield of our time, a bit before we found ourselves digitally brainwashed, there was a stream gathering, a loose joint venture of alternate currents, not really a scene or to twist Jim's words: "Weirds scenes inside the gold mind". A spirit or an electrical impulsion we're all connected (or disconnected to), a place where we all belong... Look no further, space is the place. It was the present, you can have it now. Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1968 - Standards, Versions and Revamps Vol.9 (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2015-05 Rather than trying to find some covers released in 1968 which would reflect the events from that year, such as the assassination of Martin Luther King, the Soviet Union invasion of Czechoslovakia, anti-Vietnam war protests throughout the western world, The Beatles' 'White Album' or the Mexico Olympics Black Power salute, we've stayed on the low on the political energy here, and instead focused on that warming Paris DJs classy and groovy sound you've been expecting from your number one French label. Paris DJs Soundsystem presents Some Of The Best Things In Life Are Free Vol.6 (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2015-05-16 The 'Free Music' biz is vast and mostly uncharted. While every kind of shitty media only spotlights music that is sold, distributed, promoted, subsidized, etc., meaning: music from people who might buy advertising, at Paris DJs we often take the opposite route. If some music doesn't need to be sold, sometimes it's because it can't be sold, sometimes it's because it's just too good to be sold and shared with the whole world! But I digress. In 1984 The Grateful Dead revolutionized the music biz with their approach to free music. In the 1990s if you thought nothing happened, you just missed all the free music that followed 1984, from a whole generation of bands. If you don't get what I'm talking about here that's just because you haven't been reading/following properly what's been published in this website... Anyway. Free music is quite something and every two months roughly, I go, hunt, dig and pick some of the finest free music that's out there, and build a short story with it. I called it 'Some Of The Best Things In Life Are Free', which is quite self-explanatory. Isn't it? My first pick is the single extracted from Dokkerman and The Turkeying Fellaz's new album out on Tramp Records this month. Gritty deep funk from Budapest, Hungary, this is heavy shit from a badass nine piece band! I've stayed on the same spirit with Breakdown Brass, a masterful brass band from Brooklyn, NY, who've just released an essential Afro-funky 7 inch on Kept Records, which they also share for free in digital form on their bandcamp page. You're gonna love those cats... Coming next are some friends/collaborators of Paris DJs, the Ancient Astronauts duo of Kabanjak and Dogu, two dope downbeat/hip hop/reggae producers from Cologne, Germany. They have a dub tune in the latest 'Bust Free' compilation from Cold Busted that I couldn't do without here. Doctor Stereo from Buenos Aires, Argentina, is not that much of a collaborator of this little Paris DJs label, but he's been appearing in those pages quite repeatedly anyway. The man's got a knack for digging into the groovy obscure and he's often very on point. Now let's get back to Europe with a hip hop producer from Bristol, UK, Frenic, who's released an elegant cinematic/downtempo/instrumental hip hop album for free on Bandcamp. Picking a tune out of it wasn't an easy treat since the album has really been conceived as a whole story but I did my best. Italian Crime Funk masters Calibro 35 shouldn't be unknown to Paris DJs' readers and listeners. We invited them for a mix of Italian soundtracks, did an interview with them and featured the band quite prominently in these pages. To celebrate their current Euro tour, they've released a free mashup version of The Beastie Boys' 'Sabotage' hit. Psych rock meets hip hop at its finest, it's just huge, don't pass on this one! We then head back over the Altantic with DJ/turntablist, musician and beat maker from Palm Springs, California, DJ Day, and his latest edit, a disco/hip hop classic tune from 1982 for all the party b-boys out there. But the party doesn't stop here, and I'm glad to be able to featured some DJs from Paris, SLKT et Jodeli, better known as the Around The World duo. Their rework of 1970s Nigerian singer Mad Man Jaga builds a bridge between modern electronics and old school afrobeat. A heavy dancefloor tune for sure. Also from Paris, French producer with roots in Chile Orlando Diaz Corvalan, better known as Medline, is present with an hybridation of latin and Kenyan music. Pure roots for the soul announcing the debut album of The West Bridge Band-Kibera Esbera on Electric Cowbell Records for Record Store Day 2015 - which I need to check asap! A Paris DJs mix or compilation is always better with a track produced by Adrian Quesada in Austin, Texas, and this one isn't an exception. The 'Brownout presents Brown Sabbath' album released last year on Ubiquity is such a marvel of latin psych funk rock that I'm very enthousiastic about finding another free extract from this LP. You're gonna trip yourself out on this one that recalls the famous 'Maggot Brain' from Funkadelic. You should get that album if you haven't already... Brooklyn, NY based producer, DJ and Musician Gramatik is one of the rising stars of the electro-soul hip hop scene. He puts out frenetically some free albums and EPS that generate millions of downloads and consequentely fills a crazy booking schedule. His latest release is a cool downtempo hip hop/soul crossover, the kind you play on repeat while waiting for a long-player in the same vein, featuring Raekwon of the iconic hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan and soul singer Orlando Napier. Closing this selection is a track from 2013 by a band from Iceland I had never heard about before: Kaleo. Their blend of indie rock and blues is catchy and groovy, as opposed to other Icelandic bands, rather more focused on chilled electronics or ambient pop... I'd love to be able to check the album but I don't think it's been released outside of their homeland. Thankfully their appearance at the 2015 Bonnaroo festival might be a game-changer! ...And that's it for this mix, I'll be back in a month or so with my collegue Grant Phabao on the decks for a new volume of mixed music that you may download for free as a whole or separately, track by track (check the individual links in the tracklist below). Paris DJs Soundsystem presents Some Of The Best Things In Life Are Free Vol.5 (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2015-03-06 Some people just stream. Some take a subscription to a streaming service and they feel they have all the music they need at their disposal, anytime. One thing's for sure, they're passing on the cool free music downloads we're hunting for this series of selections. Those are often special tracks, mashups, remixes aiming towards DJs or to showcase some music skills; to which we try to add a vast batch of fresh new singles just coming out of the oven, and tracks picked for some cool festivals' mixtapes. The "free" music model is an ever-expanding business so this series of mixes is for the moment an ongoing, unlimited one, and, as usual, every one of the tunes played here is available separately on the web (check the links in the tracklisting), so we're proud to be able to say once more that some of the best things in life are free! We open with a bootie from producer Sam Redmore (who's just liberated all his mashups on Bandcamp!), blending a classic hip hop tune from NYC duo Dead Prez with a roots reggae production from Israeli hip hop stars Subliminal & Chulu. A mashup by Birmingham DJ Sam Redmore, who's just put out a slew of free remixes on his bandcamp page. We checked all those and picked another bootleg that'll appear later on in this mix, with the a capella of a neo-standard from Missy Elliott over a cumbia groove by NYC producers/DJs Greenwood Rhythm Coalition (check their 2011 Paris DJs guest mix)… Things then get trippy on a jazz tip, with Los Angeles band Buyepongo doing an interpretation and homage to Mulatu Astake, before going into deep hip hop beats from Belgian producer Poldoore, reworking Bill Withers' classic 'Ain't No Sunshine', and a reverse action turn, with rhymes from San Diego rapper Real J. Wallace over a Lee Fields & The Expressions instrumental. A cut 'n'roll and starts the 3rd single from The Suffers, a ten-piece band from Houston, TX who are redefining the sound of Gulf Coast Soul, intertwining elements of classic American soul with pop and latin percussion. A cumbia/hip hop Sam Redmore mashup later and begins a new… Monophonics deep soul tune! The San Francisco psychedelic funk band is on fire on the web these days, with free singles on Bandcamp, live tunes on soundcloud and more… They have a new album coming out soon and it's cool to see them keeping on sharing and caring that much. Love this band. Picking a tune from the just released 'Adventure To Pepperland Through Rhyme & Space' blending 90s NYC hip hop with Beatles samples wasn't easy. The Edan one is heavy shit and quite respectful of the psychedelic hip hop master previous works. Things get even heavier right after, with some Afro-Balkanese funk from Brooklyn's Breakdown Brass band, recorded at Dunham Studios by Thomas Brenneck! Damn cool and a free download just like all the other tunes in this mix!! Let's keep on getting nuts, with a mad disco rap from Gift of Gab and Raashan Ahmad, extracted from the just released Motown versus Quannum remix project 'MoQuannum: Soul To Sole'; with a funk rock cover of Babe Ruth's 'The Mexican' by the GZA (Wu-Tang Clan) and Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine); with a new latin dancefloor rework by Boston-based duo Whiskey Barons… Tim Love Lee and Shawn Lee follow, with cinematic funk taken from their 'New York Trouble' project based on KPM 1970s LPs. We then take a stroll to one of our favorite Afro blogs, Orogod, with a 45 from Sierra Leone musician/singer/songwriter Bunny Mack, and his classic 1979 disco hit 'Let Me Love You'. This one's never gets old. Finally, we close this show with some Canadian funk and a tune extracted from the gritty, live-recorded 'Dirt On The Floor EP' from The Soul Motivators in Toronto, Ontario. And we'll be back with a new eclectic selection of free tunes in a month or two, of course! Tracklisting : 01. Dead Prez vs Chulu & Subliminal - Hip Hop (Sam Redmore Mashup) (from 'All Tracks' compilation, 2015 / self-released) [free download on samredmore.bandcamp.com] 02. Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1967 - Standards, Versions and Revamps Vol.8 (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2015-02-10 1967 was the year of the summer of love and of The Beatles' masterpiece 'Sgt. Peppers Lonely Heart Club Band' (and of course many other great records). With acid, musicians experienced what it took Tibetan monks 20 years to obtain, opening the doors of perception in 20 minutes. On the covers front, though, things just slowly started to venture into psychedelic waters, as you'll hear in this selection. Opener is another surprising version of the 'Fever' classic. There's so many it's always very cool to stumble upon a very original one. Larry Williams & Johnny Watson's bluesy jazz guitar take with big band horns arrangements counts as one of those. Allen Toussaint's 'Get out Of My Life Woman' had been heavily covered too. Here's a Mike Bloomfield-ish version by US band The New Apocalypse, with nice horns, loud drums, clean bass, pulsating organ, breaks and a cool "funk-rock" appeal. We then go into the huge Bobby Hebb 'Sunny', and a previously unissued version from The Temptations' singer Dennis edwards, released last year through Ace Records. Now let's talk a bit about The Sweet Inspirations, covering here the Wilson Pickett tune 'Don't Fight It'. The gospel-soul band sang backup for Solomon Burke, Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Esther Phillips and a few others. Their 1967 album is the shit, great tune after great tune, don't hesitate to go diggin' for this one. You can also grab 'The Complete Atlantic Singles Plus' compilation released last year on double CD for a more global overview… The 'Get Out Of My Way' by Joe Torres which follows isn't a cover, but its infectious Latin machismo is one we couldn't pass on. Our love of Jamaica got us to pick the rocksteady gem 'Perfidia' by Phyllis Dillon, produced by Duke Reid at Treasure Isle, a perfect breather in the middle of this mix, before getting seriously funky once again with heavy soul from Etta James, covering Sonny & Cher's classic 'I Got You Babe', with the groovy combo from Cincinnati Dee Felice Trio, and their soulful pop rendition of The Lovin Spoonful's 'Summer In The City', or with a calypso take on the Jimmy Castor Bunch's 'Hey Leroy'! A 1967 King Curtis original, 'Memphis soul Stew', is presented here in a totally different version, recorded live a few years later with a stellar crew of musicians. Because we like tweaking with our own concepts a bit… and felt the irresistible live version is superior than the original, despite what The Guardian says (see here). Not many people read the texts that go along with mp3s anyway, so whatever. Getting back on the 1967 cover songs track, we've found a furious 'Uptight' (Stevie Wonder) by Jackie Wilson & Count Basie, and a tight and funky instrumental version of 'Unchain My Heart' by flutist Herbie Mann, to close this latest chapter in our big books of covers. Paris DJs Soundsystem presents Some Of The Best Things In Life Are Free Vol.4 (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2014-10-16 Following a successful crowdfunding campaign where we raised nearly 4000€ to press a new vinyl LP, it was kinda obvious to balance our karma and offer a new mix in our series of eclectic selections of free tunes found on the web. So, what's the best way to start a mix or a compilation? A Brownout tune, of course! We've found a rare Rock-Funk-Latin-Psych cover of The Beatles by our friends from the Paris-Austin Connection, this just perfect. What else? Well there's plenty more… starting with onljoe, a dub/reggae act from the UK we discovered thanks to the Ghostwriterz guest mix last november, and a dub from their latest (free) single by pioneering UK dub producer/selector Nick Manasseh. More dub vibes are next with melodica specialist Art-X from Tours, France, soon followed by an extract from the latest Grant Phabao free EP, featuring Jamaican deejay Reggie Stepper - marvelous and with great dynamics! We then head towards South America, with the addictive Brazilian hip hop/folk from Lucas Santtana, trippy psychedelic cumbia from Bareto in Lima, Peru, and a cool remix of Seu Jorge by Captain Planet… before going geographically nuts in a La Sono Mondiale manner, with some afrobeat recorded in one day in Cologne, Germany by Shareholder Tom, with Los Angeles-based rapper Malkovich voicing the famous 'Make It Fast Make It Slow' from late 70s Ghanean artist Rob, with mashups of Orgone with Jay-Z or Rjd2 with Common!! Pfffeeeww what a trip. Third and final part of the mix is more roots, with some organ funk from Soule Monde, American soul from Monophonics, UK folk jazz from Sara Mitra and, to close this selection on a light note, some loveable pop/folk from Nashville combo Drew Holcomb and The Neighbors. Every one of those tunes is available separately on the web (check the links in the tracklisting), because some of the best things in life are free, right? Tracklisting : 01. Brownout feat.
