Paris DJs Soundsystem presents Outernational Ska and Reggae Dub Covers
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-12-31

This is Paris DJs mix #400 and the last one, closing the curtain on our cult podcast of mixes which gathered 3 millions of downloads in 7 years of activity. We'll now take a long-awaited rest, focusing on the Paris DJs label in 2013. This was an amazing adventure, thanks to everyone who participated in one form or another. We feel we've raised the podcast standard of mixed music to a very high level and can't wait to see some other people taking up the mantle while meeting the same requirements. Our monthly playlist will still happen every 30 days (so don't hesitate to keep on sending us quality records and music), and you'll have to switch to our podcast of 'Virtual Releases' to keep on following the music we publish for free… We'll be doing a few DJ sets here and there, and maybe start some Paris DJs parties soon… So happy new year everyone and enjoy this last dish of reggae covers and remixes, including a yet unreleased track from the upcoming Silvertones album produced by Grant Phabao (out soon on Paris DJs Records), and the famous roots reggae of Lee Fields that's available in our first compilation 'Dis Is Good For You - Tropical Grooves and Afrofunk International'. Oh! And our editor-in-chief Djouls is more than happy to close this podcast show with a track from a ska band from New Dehli...

Analog Africa Selection Vol.3 - Los Diablos Del Rimo Mix by DJ PepeSol

Analog Africa Selection Vol.3 - Los Diablos Del Rimo Mix by DJ PepeSol
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-12-10

Samy Ben Rejdeb and his Analog Africa label upped the Paris DJs podcast level of excellence quite hard way back in march 2008, when he sent us his 'Analog Africa Selection Vol.1' mix, featuring a few extracts from his superb compilation of raw and psychedelic afro sounds from 1970s Benin and Togo, 'African Scream Contest'. It was by far the best mix we had ever posted at the time.

Then at the end of the same year he came back with a second volume, 'Analog Africa Selection Vol.2'celebrating his first Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou release, 'The Vodoun Effect' from 1972-75.

Many have been following the story from that point on… 'Legends of Benin 1969-81', 'Echos Hypnotiques' from Orchestre Poly-Rytmo 1969-1979, both released in 2009, the same year we organized the first Ebo Taylor show in Europe, thanks to Samy who had booked him for the 'Africa Delay' party in Frankfurt!

2010 saw the release of an Anibal Velasquez anthology from 1962-1978, 'Mambo Loco', the 'Afro-beat Airways' compilation from Ghana and Togo 1972-79, and an 'Angola Soundtrack ' covering the 1968-76 era from Luanda.

In 2011 Analog Africa kept the flow of releases steady with essential reissues from Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou-Dahomey ('The 1st Album' from 1973), Ghanean afrofunkster Rob ('Funky Rob Way'), and a compilation of mid to late 70s African Soul from Burkina-Faso, 'Bambara Mystic Soul').

Which brings us to 2012 and another masterful must-listen for all the ears looking out for some tropical-but-different kind of sounds, 'The Bariba Sound' from Le Super Borgou de Parakou in north-east Benin… Now comes a new compilation of obscure tropical Colombian music jewels from the 1960s to the 1980s, 'Diabos Del Ritmo', for which we went to Frankfurt to meet Samy for an upcoming portrait to be published on Paris DJs soon. The double CD, quadruple vinyl set was just released, and we should be receiving our records anytime now so stay connected for the review…

A few weeks ago we had the excellent surprise of receiving from Samy a message saying 'look at this artcover for a mix we prepared for Paris DJs and my new record's release this week, music will be coming your way soon'. The mix followed a few days later, sent by DJ PepeSol from the Sabrosa Sound Sistema in Brisbane, Australia, who describes it like this:

'A conclusive mix by Sabrosa Son Sistema's, PepeSol, hailing from the Sub Tropical continent of Australia focused on the Afro leanings of the sounds from Colombia's northern Coastline and in celebration of the anticipated Analog Africa release 'Los Diablos Del Ritmo'.  From the rich harmonics of Andres Landero's Hohner accordion followed by deep Afro bass lines signature to 'La Costa', this is a mix that ducks and weaves the back streets of a Colombian soundscape, an ode to the bubbling Colombian melting pot.' - DJ Pepesol

Fully mastered by Grant Phabao in Paris, this mix is definitively an international collaborative work and number 397 in our podcast of mixes.
We're trying to prep a few surprises for our 3 last mixes, since - as you might have heard about if you follow us on Facebook - mix #400 will be our last one…

Paris DJs Soundsystem presents the melody-driven sound of Marco Benevento

Paris DJs Soundsystem presents the melody-driven sound of Marco Benvento
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-11-15

A new generation of keyboard players rose in the 90s starting with, of course, John Medeski (from Medeski, Martin and Wood), the undisputed king, the Jimi Hendrix of keyboards, but also Robert Walter (from The Greyboy Allstars), Brian Haas (from Jacob Fred Jazz Oddyssey), Page McConnell (from Phish), or Kyle Hollingsworth (from The String Cheese Incident)…

Then came the 2000s with Marco Benevento, one half of the Benevento/Russo Duo, co-founder of <>The Royal Potato Family label, and heir to Medeski's throne.

Marco is beyond talented, he played with so many different bands doing so many different styles, from straight forward jazz, to tripped-out jamband crazyness. Even funk, rock, reggae… nothing can resists his themes and melody-driven lines, tugging at your heartstrings like none other, with or without distorsion!

Marco's been a regular on the New York City contemporary, experimental jazz scene for years. He's performed with countless musicians including Matt Chamberlain, Charlie Hunter, John Medeski, Mike Gordon, Trey Anastasio, Eric Krasno, Wayne Krantz, John Ellis, Dave Dreiwitz, Marc Friedman, Reed Mathis, Bobby Previte, Ari Hoening, Terreon Gully, Brian Haas, DJ Olive, DJ Logic, Steven Bernsetin, Briggin Kraus, Lyrics Born, Mike Dillon, Les Claypool, Phil Lesh, Skerik, Johnny Vidacovich, Stanton Moore and others…

We gathered his complete discography, from the Jazz Farmers beginnings in 2002 and the Benevento-Russo Duo years until 2006, the featurings on albums from Brian Mitchell, Trey Anastasio, Matt Trowbridge, Everyone Orchestra or A.C. Newman (among others), to the supergroups GRAB (Gordon, Russo, Anastasio, Benevento), Bustle In Your Hedgerow, Garage A Trois, Surprise Me Mr. Davis, and of course his amazing solo career ("Live At Tonic" in 2007, "Invisible Baby" in 2008, "Me Not Me" and "Live In NYC: The Sulivan Hall Residency" in 2009, "Between The Needles and Nightfall" in 2010 and "TigerFace" in 2012).

After re-listening to that complete output, chronologically, the evolution in Marco Benevento's sound, the road he's taken with its twists and turns, always going forward, became more obvious, setting forth a vision for music that connects the dots between Medeski Martin and Wood, Arcade Fire, Tortoise, Brian Eno and Brad Mehldau. Yep, that unique!

Here's our 45mn mixed introduction to Marco Benevento's music.
We've also prepared a nice interview for you to read while listening to the mix - in english or en français!
Get on the bus and enjoy the ride.

Todd Simon's United States of Dub

Todd Simon - The United States of Dub
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-11-01

Todd Simon is a trumpeter, multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger and performer living and working in sunny Los Angeles, CA. Todd has found a niche providing soulful horn and string sounds for countless projects, many of which have been featured on Paris DJs: The Echocentrics, Connie Price & the Keystones, the Quantic Soul Orchestra, Antibalas, Clutchy Hopkins, Madlib's Sound Directions, El Michels Affair, The Lions, Ocote Soul Sounds, Spanky Wilson, Breakestra, Flying Lotus, Mochilla Timeless with Mulatu Astatke and Arthur Verocai, Sugarman 3, Orgone, Nickodemus, Ohmega Watts, Amayo's Fu-Arkist-Ra, N.A.S.A., Mayer Hawthorne... His current projects include Adrian Younge's Venice Dawn, The Decoders, Todd Simon's Ethio-Cali Ensemble, and upcoming albums of The Delfonics, Ghostface Killah, CSS, Rhye and Quadron.
Following-up on our open invitation in the Clutchy Hopkins interview that never happened, Todd contacted us saying "I'd love to compile a specially-themed dj mix for you (as mentioned in the Clutchy interview, figure out a theme and I'll hook you all up!!!". We asked him if he was into the current American Dub and Reggae scene… Well Todd did a real investigative work, adding some information on each track he picked, and we had the full thing illustrated by our man Ben Hito, for your aural and visual pleasure.

I've been following posts and releases from Paris DJs for quite some time. Their eclectic tastes in World Music, DJ culture and new music have been a great resource for me over the years. Although I'm not that proud of the country I reside in, the US does supply some great Dub sounds. 'The United States of Dub' is a collection that features rarities only found on vinyl, brand new recordings that are finally being leaked, versions that might have been looked over and tracks that I've dug up from my vaults. Some of America's best Dub producers are showcased on this mix representing a sound that pays respect to Jamaica and the UK. One might not look to the US for Dub, but hopefully after listening to this mix you might want to dig deeper. (Todd Simon)

Paris DJs Soundsystem & Ping Pong Promotion present Blues Ain't Nothin' But A Low-Down Shakin' Chill

Paris DJs Soundsystem - Blues Ain't Nothin' But A Low-Down Shakin' Chill
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-10-14

This mix started as a monthly Bag of Goodies, checking the stack of new records and the playlist of digital downloads we received during the past month. Then a trend emerged, some overall bluesy feeling that permeated many of those new albums and singles. We gradually got deep into a 21st century blues kind of vibe, through many music styles. One can wonder if the global economic crisis might be affecting today's music producers… or if it's just the rise of another cycle in music trends? There was a huge rock copycats period, new wave hit electro music quite hard before it went nu disco on many, and hip hop has gone mainstream. That was the late 70s and the whole 80s all over again. So what's next? A comeback of mid-1990s trip-hop?

Well at Paris DJs we just call it the Blues.
Nothin' but a low-down shakin' chill.

Kid Koala just released a full album of scratching blues trickery on Ninja Tune. Meshell Ndegeocello's going back to her roots with an album of Nina Simone covers. Menahan Street Band gem of a second album is music to an unreleased Sergio Leone western starring the Wu Tang set in 1992 as their leader Thomas Brenneck puts it. Former Metronomy-member Gabriel Stebbing returns to the scene as Night Works with a plaintive and soulful R&B ballad. Grant Phabao filters the southern-fried, psychedelic funk of Adrian Quesada's The Echocentrics through Jamaican gospel. Hidden Orchestra reinvents chill-out with their textural groove and head-nodding experiences. Doctor L notes that We Got Lost along the way and goes back to folk/blues songs with his unique trippy style. Lukid amazes with his soulful/ambient electronic pop. Ghana-based singer/songwriter Andrew Ashong enlists the help of Detroit techno/Chicago sound sculptor Theo Parrish for some romantic beats and soulful ballads. Singer/songwriter Jesse Boykins III and producer/emcee Melo-X join forces as Zulu Guru, bringing together a new electronic sound rooted in soul and blues. Studio One veteran Carlton Livingston starts putting on his soulful reggae songs some soul jazz dressings thanks to Parisian sound master Grant Phabao. And jazz drummer Karriem Riggins pays tribute to James 'J Dilla' Yancey's percussive blend of cosmic soul…

Do you feel it?

Quantic - Cumbia 78 RPM MIx

Quantic - Cumbia 78 RPM
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-08-28

To conclude Soundway Records' 10th anniversary celebration on Paris DJs all summer long, special guest Will Holland a.k.a. Quantic has prepared a unique and stylish mix of 78 RPM Colombian Cumbia! The famous producer/musician & DJ based out of his Cali, Colombia studio, Sonido del Valle, never stops working and touring. Hot on the heels of his impressive Original Sound of Cumbia compilation of colombian Cumbia & Porro 1948-1979 (Soundway), he put out earlier this year a marvelous collaboration album with Alice Russell Look Around The Corner (Tru Thoughts), and launched this summer the new all-star Colombian band Ondatrópica, with Mario Galeano of Frente Cumbiero. Their debut album was released this summer on Soundway Records.

Thanks to Joss Yerbury at Kartel Creative for helping us build this series of 4 mixes. Happy 10 years to Soundway Records, let's hope for more decades like this first ones! You can still enjoy Chris Menist' Leftfield Sunshine mix, Batida's Tirei O Chapéu mixtape, or Miles Cleret's Nigerian Rock selection.
Thanks again to all for participating.

Paris DJs Soundsystem - 21st Century Hammond Vol.1

Paris DJs Soundsystem - 21st Century Hammond Vol.1
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-08-21

Forget about Jimmy Smith, Reuben Wilson, Jimmy McGriff or Dr. Lonnie Smith for a while and meet the new masters of the Hammond B3 in this often violent, mean and sick mix. Those prestigious ancestors' disciples are called Raphael Wressnig, Mike Mangan, Bruce Cohen, Joe Doria or Guillaume Métenier. From USA to Austria and France, they carry on the great soul jazz tradition (mostly in trio formulas) with super heavy hammond sounds.

Chris Menist - Leftfield Sunshine

Chris Menist - Leftfield Sunshine
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-08-18

Chris Menist is already a legend in our books with his mind-blowing Thai compilations on Soundway Records and Finders Keepers. We had the chance to invite him in April 2011 to celebrate his Sound of Siam and Thai? Dai comps and he gladly accepted our invitation to celebrate Soundway Records 10th anniversary with a new exclusive mix. "It's a kind of left field-tropical selection, featuring quite a few artists Soundway have had on their records over the years, but with different tracks by them, not the ones that were compiled necessarily. Hope it's a fitting nod to the label's 10th year." says Chris. Enjoy this dish of rare world grooves!

Batida - Tirei o Chapéu Mixtape

Batida - Tirei o Chapéu Mixtape
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-08-07

A distinctly vibrant project with it’s feet firmly rooted in the past, Batida combine samples from old 1970s Angolan tracks with modern electronic dance music. Here's what he has to say about our Paris DJs invitation: "I did this mix as did early Batida radio shows: mixing old tunes with new beats. On the old side you have Angolan tunes i choose not based on the artist but on grooves i like, some of i have sampled on Batida tracks and, on the new beats, you have favourite Lisbon producers such as my buddy Beat Laden on an unreleased remix, Marfox with his minimal productions, on a track from his EP, Conductor of Buraka fame, but of Conjunto Ngonguenha fame for me, on an unreleased track he shared, another unreleased remix by Octa Push and some Luandan stars: Kilamu, Dj Znobia and my favourite MC, Bruno M. who promised to feature on a future Batida track as i djed for him on a show. Ending track is a remix by Mauricio Pacheco, a brasilian producer, who picked on a Teta Lando classic with a still inspiring lyric. An anthemn that always gives me chills. Hope you feel it."

Tracklisting :
01. Batida - Tirei o Chapeu
02. Musangola - Pe Descalco
03. Demonio King - ?
04. Mamukueno - Rei do Palhetinho
05. Dj Znobia - Waaa

Lucas Santtana is a Brazilian singer, composer and producer. In 2011 he released the marvelous Sem Nostalgia album in Europe through classy label Mais Um Discos, a blend of "Brazilian guitar, dub, acoustic samba, electronica, bossa and quirky samples, with an innovative & laid-back approach to things"… Earlier this month Lucas released a very cool Remix Nostalgia compilation of remixes, and later on in October he'll put out a new album, O Deus Que Devasta Mas Também Cura, both featured in this mix. We had the chance to quickly meet him last year when he first came to Paris, did a 2 minutes photo session with Jean Saint Jean (check the gallery, and hooked up with the man to put up on ParisDJs.com a mix of the music he's currently listening to…

Paris DJs Soundsystem - Bag Of Goodies Vol.8

Even though we're gathering a quite explosive selection of Afrofunk, Latin, Jazz, R'n'B, indonesian Bass, Hip Hop, Rock, Soul, Electro and Brazil vibes in the same hour, our recipe is not that complex. This month's Bag of Goodies' selection started with a playlist of 1000+ tracks and a stack of vinyls and CDs. After some careful digging, Djouls extracted 50 tracks, gave them to Loik to sort out two handfuls of the best goodies in there, added a few last-minute spices, and went to Grant Phabao's studio for some masterful cooking! The menu includes some nice grooves from friendly labels Electric Cowbell, Daptone, Counter, Urbanworld, Innovative Leisure, Luv'N'Haight/Ubiquity, BBE, Tru Thoughts, Mocambo and EBS Diggin, in the form of a panoramic view of Paris DJs' access to quality music...

Chicha Libre Are Molesting Laura

Chicha Libre - Are Molesting Laura
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-06-02

Brooklyn's psychedelic tropical and surf-cumbia act Chicha Libre are specialized in deviant covers since their very first album Sonido Amazonico. They've just released a fantastic new album called Canibalismo with a similar spicy recipe. In that respect they belong to the great chicha (Peru's own version of the cumbia) fusion's tradition with elements of literally every kind of existing music: funk, pop, rock, French variétés, krautrock, classical music, etc. In 2007 and 2010 Chicha Libre and Barbes Records owner Olivier Conan released two must-have compilations (The Roots of Chicha & The Roots Of Chicha 2), revealing this hidden latin genre to the astonished eyes of the world. That's why Olivier was a perfect match for a cumbia and latin Molesting Laura guest mix after the great interview we've just done with him. The result is a wild and unexpected clash of his personal tastes and obsessions for hybridations. Don't miss Chicha Libre playing their very first french gig at Paris' New Morning on June 30th.

Grant Phabao and Djouls - 21st Century Afro Spectacular Vol.3

Grant Phabao and Djouls - 21st Century Afro Spectacular Vol.3
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-05-25

When I was younger you couldn't find funky, soulful or psychedelic Afro music at all in France. Then I stumbled upon a used Fela CD and with the arrival of the 21st century I discovered Antibalas. Both rocked my musical world and changed my life forever. Flash forward to 2012 and I now run the Paris DJs music agency, producing with label partner Grant Phabao the same kind of Afro music I fell in love with years ago. Thanks to the site's network of musical friends, we've managed to gather in our studios and productions musicians from Fela's Afrika 70 and Egypt 80, Antibalas, Brownout/Grupo Fantasma, Massak, Souljazz Orchestra, Tarace Boulba, Les Frères Smith, Psyco, Ebo Taylor's Afrobeat Academy, etc. Those tracks will form the core of a Paris DJs Soundsystem Afrofunk/Tropical/Reggae/Funk/Soul compilation album to be released in september and we are looking out for this project for other artists who represent what Paris DJs has been about for nearly 7 years. So if you have some unreleased tropical grooves to submit to us don't wait any longer! Meanwhile, here's the 3rd volume of our Spectacular selections of new cool afro grooves from the scene, with a brand new exclusive track from Franck Biyong's new project with The Diamane Bantu Messengers produced at Paris DJs' studios, the first extract from the upcoming new Antibalas album, friendly vibes from Akalé Wubé, The Liberators, Chico Mann, Shogun Orchestra, Beta Hector, Ebo Taylor (one of the two tracks from the new album on which Grant Phabao did a bit of his magic), Jungle By Night, Amayo (adding vocals on a Melvin Gibbs track featuring John Medeski!) or Seun Kuti… and more friendly vibes sent to us by our label collegues from Electric Cowbell, Agogo, Record Kicks, Ubiquity, Truth and Soul, Honest Jon's or Jazz and Milk… plus some digging finds such as Dereb The Ambassador, The Macrotones, Bixiga 70, Topaz or Papa Chango… and with a surprising closing track from the Classica Orchestra Afrobeat, some crazy Italian guys re-arranging Fela for classical music! As usual this new 21st Century Afro 25-tracks selection gathers modern Afrobeat, Afrofunk, Afrolatin and Ethio grooves from all over the world, selected by myself (Djouls), mixed and fully mastered by Grant Phabao. [Check also the Extravaganza monster mix, and the Spectacular Vol.1 and Vol.2]

Andrew Jervis - California Dreaming - A Sport of Selection Mix for The Paris DJs
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-05-18

Andrew Jervis invited us to do a mix for his brand new website The Sport of Selection (info here), we couldn't pass on inviting him back on Paris DJs...
'I wanted to do a mix of folksy soul music that felt Californian, and captured a sunny Springtime vibe. Not all the artists featured come from California. But as I discovered when I moved here, few people are truly from California. We just move here, soak it all in, and help turn the place into something truly eclectic. So here's a selection of sounds featuring what you might think of when some says California - acoustic guitars, hippy love songs, and some soulful protesting. There are also some newer innovative left coast beats and tracks with a tropical folk vibe. Hope you like!' (Andrew Jervis)

Hazmat Modine - Blues & Brass Songbook

Hazmat Modine - Blues and Brass songbook
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-05-13

We are a kind of post-modern-ethno-Jugband says Hazmat Modine's frontman Wade Schuman in the long interview we've just published (read it here). A man of many passions, Wade composes his unique and rich sound like a golden age painter would choose different colours, textures, frames and materials. It's a variegated world full of strange or mundane animals, filled with tiny sounds from nature. Even if the core of what Hazmat Modine does is blues, the musical influences spectrum and tastes of the band, revealed in this exclusive mix, are almost infinite. You'll meet some longtime Hazmat friends and collaborators (Natalie Merchant, Gangbe Brass band, The Wiyos...)  as well as living or dead harmonica blues legends... Grant Phabao and Djouls - 21st Century Afro Spectacular Vol.2

Grant Phabao and Djouls - 21st Century Afro Spectacular Vol.2
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-04-29

Afrobeat is a form of music that's already been perfected and there are many bands who are just trying to attain that, most of the time writing their own compositions which reflect their own influences. Sometimes they'll play a Cuban clave or something else which somehow or other still fits. So unless Fela comes back to them and says Don't play Afrobeat, they're gonna keep on doing it. Here's our second spectacular selection of new cool afro grooves from some of those bands, with a second exclusive track from the Grant Phabao Afrobeat Arkestra, to be released on a limited 7 inch in september, friendly vibes from Adrian Quesada (remixing Vieux Farka Touré or producing The Funk Ark), Chico Mann, Mr Confuse, Seun Kuti, Hard Proof, Anthony Joseph, Ticklah (producing Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars), The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra, Doctor L and Kiala, more friendly vibes sent by our label collegues from Jack To Phono, Electric Cowbell, ESL Music, Ubiquity, Jazz&Milk, BBE Music or Names You Can Trust, and, of course, some thingies we grabbed here and there. 21st Century Afrobeat, Afrofunk, Afrolatin and Ethio grooves from all over the world, selected by Djouls, mixed and fully mastered by Grant Phabao. Do you want more? Did you already get our 21st Century Afro Extravaganza and the first volume of our 21st Century Afro Spectacular?

Paris DJs Soundsystem - Election Mix Pt.1

Paris DJs Soundsystem - Election Mix Part 1
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-04-21

Tomorrow (sunday, april 22nd) will the first round of the French presidential election. After 5 years of monarchy with Nicolas Sarkozy, who managed to bring down the 5th republic, destroy France's influence and credibility in the rest of the world, and install a climate of fear in his own country, it has became essential for everyone to VOTE FOR A CHANGE. Yes you heard that before ('since 54' as legendary Jamaican artist Carlton Livingston would rhyme) but it's really important that France may know who it is and that abstention may be as low as possible. Don't believe the press who says that leftists extremists are refusing reality, it's a lie: as a famous poet once said, Reality Is A Viewpoint, so don't let anyone impose his vision of reality on top of your own. The majority of French people wants to get rid of the wanabee George Bush who's been running the show for the last 5 years. François Hollande's Socialist Party is a center-right one as much as François Bayrou's Modem, though he might be the best chance to beat the current midget king - those who watch Game of Thrones will get the pun. Jean-Luc Melenchon and its Left Front Coalition has been the most dynamic figure in an otherwise dull campaign. But don't even let all this really influence your vote. Try voting with your heart and not with tactics in mind. Well, don't try voting. Just fucking vote.

Phil Meadley - Eastern Bloc Rockin Beats DJ Mix

Phil Meadley - Eastern Bloc Rockin Beats DJ Mix
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-04-17

Nascente’s global funk train arrives in Eastern Europe with the release of Eastern Bloc Funk Experience: Psych-Funk, Satellite Soul and Cold War Disco. Having visited the warmer climes of Brazil, Cuba, Caribbean, South Africa and beyond with selectors like Andy Smith, Quantic and Hugo Mendez (Sofrito) on board, Nascente arrives behind the iron curtain and serves up a revelatory new experience.  On this mix put together exclusively for Paris DJs, album compiler Phil Meadley features some of the best tracks from the compilation.
Don't believe the lies you've been reading for so many years; the West was feeding you merciless propaganda! The truth must finally be revealed... Funk was born in the USSR. It was first played and sung by the Red Army Choir in Moscow's Red Square, and after that toured Warsaw, Prague, Budapest, and East Berlin. This CD tells a story that has never been told before; the story of Eastern Bloc Funk. Yuriy Gurzhy (Russendisko)

Paris DJs Soundsystem - Bag of Goodies Vol.6

Paris DJs Soundsystem - Bag Of Goodies Vol.6
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-04-09

The march 2012 Bag of Goodies selection by Djouls and Loik is one for the dancers, soulful and full of breaks. Tel-Aviv funksters The Apples are back with a new album on Audio Montage - check our Israeli Funk Mix for more on that scene - and the first single Thang is a killer one, also available on a limited 7 inch… Next we have The Funk Ark, an afrobeat/afrolatin funk band from Washington DC. Their new album High Noon is produced by our friend Adrian Quesada and is one of the must-have of this spring! The latest from Italian soundtracks-obsessed Calibro 35 is just plain amazing and we could have played many other bombing tracks than the Uh Ah Barr we've picked… We've been spreading the gospel about this band for months, info, mix and interview are available here. Souleance, aka Fulgeance + Soulist don't need any introduction to our faithful readers, but their first album is finally out and the duo's eclectic groovism could not be avoided in our selection. Full review here. The Black Seeds come from Wellington, New Zealand. Their fusion of dub, funk, afrobeat and soul is reaching its peak with their latest album, Dust And Dirt. We might have a video interview of the band coming soon in these pages… San Francisco based band Monophonics will soon release a new album on Ubiquity Records, on the fuzzy psych side of soul and funk, and we've featured here their deeply soulful 7 inch scheduled for record store day, There's A Riot Going On. This one should fly off the shelves quite fast. We've also played some hip hop and garage rock you can download for free, from San Francisco's Innovative Leisure 2012 Sampler. You can grab this utterly cool goodie here, with fantastic tracks from Allah-Las, Nick Waterhouse, Mexicans With Guns or Hanni El Khatib… This is definitively a new label to follow, and we will. We've also came back to an album released in 2010, from Austin, Texas. The first opus from Afrobeat band Hard Proof is indeed one of the best 21st century afro thing we've heard recently, and they're currently working on their 2nd with Adrian Quesada. Adrian is kinda all over this mix, with a track from the upcoming new Brownout LP closing this session. We'll be back about this superb new latin funk album with a rock edge very soon… but back to this mix with Jakarta records in Germany, a label we discovered with Blitz The Ambassador. We contacted them about the upcoming release of afro/ethio band from New-Zealand Shogun Orchestra (to be featured on Paris DJs later on this week) and they sent us a magical soulful/hip hop/indie album from Mancini and The Creepers that we've been playing on repeat. Truly unique. We'll conclude this introduction with The Cheebacabra from Seattle, and his acidulated instrumental funk with crisp head-nodding hip hop beats and lots of analog synths. He's just released his third album, Pass The information, available on glorious vinyl and reviewed here. All in all, this spring's batch of new releases is quite fabulous and we hope next month's Bag of Goodies selection will be as exciting as this one!

Sandra Nkaké & Jî Dru - Inspirations

Sandra Nkake and Ji Dru - Inspirations - "A Travel Inside Nothing For Granted" Vol.1
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2011-04-04

It took us a year to conceive, write and produce Nothing For Granted, Sandra Nkake's new album, home-made songs that tell individual and collective fates that meet. A new album is an instant. It's a new fire to lighten up. We felt the urge to share the ideas, state of mind, direction and energy we express everyday to redefine our destiny. Here's some of the music we listened to between takes, in the car, on holidays, after the mix, in the street. A musical journey through what fed our fire. (Ji Dru and Sandra Nkake)

Beta Hector's Derriere Shakin' R&B Mix

Beta Hector's - Derriere Shakin' R&B Mix
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2011-03-24

Bassist, producer and DJ Simon Hill aka Beta Hector is our special guest this week with a groovy' RnB mix! He was the man behind the superb funk and soul Baby Charles album - on Record Kicks. We had Grant Phabao rework one of his tracks into reggae, you can still download it here. He's the bass player in uprising band Derrière, a hot rhythm and blues band who's 2nd single is produced and mixed by our recent guests DJ Format and Simon James of The Simonsound, you can check their mix here.
As Beta Hector he's recently released a stunning Sunbeam Insulin electronic soul long player (on Tru Thoughts Recordings), followed just last week by a limited 7 inch with the exclusive Boi Peixe Theme, a killer laidback afro-latin groover - you can buy it here and there are 300 copies only.

We haven't even talked about the remixes he's putting out there but you gotta try finding his rework of Marvin Gaye's What's Going On... Well there's just so much eclectic creativity in this Beta Hector guy with that we couldn't resist on challenging him with a theme for a mix, and the man delivered the goods right on point. In your face hot and burnin' derriere-shakin' R'n'B!!

"So, I approached Djouls with the concept of doing a Beta Hector mixtape for Paris DJs to celebrate the 7 inch I have coming out on HHV with Quantic, and he discovered that I play upright bass in Vintage Soul / R&B band Derriere. He told me he was really interested in this scene and that Paris DJs could use an R&B mixtape. Well I guess it's a good job that I've been stocking up on this kind of music as well as all the other genres that I like to put into my DJ sets... Of course I had to oblige, so here's my 100% vinyl selection of timeless gems that will take you back almost sixty years. I could bang on about how amazing these records still sound, how they were the precursor for soul, funk and rock music, and how I've included some absolute blues and soul legends in this fine selection, but it's probably best if we just let your ears and your heart decide for you." - Beta Hector

DJ Zhao - Punk In Africa

DJ Zhao (Ngoma Soundsystem, Berlin) - Official Punk In Africa Mix
presented by punkinafrica.co.za / ngomasound.wordpress.com
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2011-03-13

When we asked Erik Rug (friend/collaborator/neighbour/resident DJ at David Lynch's club Le Silencio in Paris) for some musical tips for an upcoming 21st Century Afro mix last week, he pointed us right away towards DJ Zhao's Punk In Africa mixtape, demonstrating the connectedness between Rock and Roll and its African roots, between power chords and dance beats, between decades past and today, between defiant youth in London and defiant youth in Zimbabwe - and that the same rhythmic blood and spirit of revolt runs in all of our veins. This mix includes exclusive mashups and re-edits, and goes from Punk to heavily Africanized Rebel Rock to Post-Punk, Dance-Punk, Political Dub, Punk Step, 60s Afro-Garage Techno, Bass Music and beyond, features remixes of Congotronics and a couple of tunes not from the motherland, but surely in keeping with the Afro-Punk spirit. We couldn't thank Erik enough for letting us discover this amazing mix and contacted right away Keith Jones, one of the two directors of the upcoming Punk In Africa movie highlighting the parallels between punk rebellion and the liberation struggle in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and further afield. As a matter of fact, Keith is a big fan of Paris DJs and has been for some time, he frequently plays a couple of Grant Phabao dubs in his own sets, and told us DJ Zhao and himself would be more than pleased to have the mix featured as a guest spot on the site! Well we ain't discussing and waiting any longer, here's the mix as we got it, you'll find plethora of links about the Punk In Africa movie and DJ Zhao in the rest of the entry. Get ready for a big slap in your ears!

Paris DJs Soundsystem - Bag of Goodies Vol.5

Paris DJs Soundsystem - Bag Of Goodies Vol.5
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-02-28

There's a particularity to our Bag of Goodies mixes this year. The selection is only made up of records and music either sent to us by labels and artists, or which we actually bought in record stores in the recent weeks. It'll be hard for us to be more supportive and current than that. We usually gather for a listening session with a few of our favorite new tracks in the bag, and try to hit the decks instantly in order for the mix to be spontaneous. This past month was full of great new music and reissues - as always - and we can't thank enough labels such as BBE Music, Kat Records, Tru-Thoughts Recordings, !K7, Double Phantom, Truth and Soul, HopeSteet Recordings, Underdog, Record Kicks or Tramp Records for sending us tasty goodies. Keep up the good work people, we are listening and sharing back the love! And see you all same time next month for a brand new Bag Of Goodies!

Lexus Blondin Y Sus Afrocubanos present Afro Cubik

Lexus Blondin Y Sus Afrocubanos present Afro Cubik
A mix of 1950's Cuban-influenced Jazz - Expect Horn Stabs and Spicy Congas Grooves!
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2011-02-21

For his first appearance on the website, London-based French producer and compiler Lexus Blondin has put together an eclectic, yet very selected mix of Afro cuban jazz. This mix will have you travel back and forth from a pre-revolutionary Havana to a post war New York, a time when record producers were not afraid to think large. Their recipe for a different shade of Bebop? Reptilian brass sections, subtle arrangements written by monuments like Lalo Schiffrin or Chico O' Farril, coupled with the musicianship of talented soloists such as James Moody, Art Blakey, Machito or Cal Tjader. The result was a percussion heavy form of music with which jazz chords and improvisation found a new structure to play around. Four to the floor double bass, swirling trumpet solos, Hard Bop piano chords makes it a delight for Jazz dancers and sample seekers. Beware, this mix is highly explosive, handle with care!

Tracklisting :
01. Cal Tjader - Lucero
(from 'Cal Tjader's Latin Concert' album, 1959 / Fantasy)
02. Lalo Schifrin - Capricho Espanol
(from 'Piano Espanol' album, 1960 / Tico)

04. The Art Blakey Percussion Ensemble - Cubano Chant

05. David Amram – Andes Breeze
from 'Latin-Jazz Celebration' album, 1983 / Elektra Musician)

DJ Manchild's Disco Dandia

DJ Manchild and HopeStreet Recordings present :  "DJ Manchild's Disco Dandia"
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-02-14

We recently did a focus on Australian label HopeStreet Recordings, reviewing a bunch of 45s from The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra, The Bombay Royale, The Cactus Channel and The Putbacks. Hope Street have been working with a couple of Melbourne's most widely travelled DJs and collectors, about getting some mixes together related to their releases, and asked Paris DJs to help spreading the good word. Here's the first one of those mixes, prepared with love by Ethan Hill aka DJ Manchild who's been sorting out and blending some amazing rarities of Bollywood music circa 1965-1985, all off original vinyl, to showcase the sounds that influence The Bombay Royale and the single Sote Sote Adhi Raat. We played this absolute killer Bolywood disco track in our end of the year Block Party 2011 mix and our Indian honcho Djouls is more than glad to have this special treat up on Paris DJs right on for Valentine's Day! There's also a video of DJ Manchild presenting his 12 favorite Bollywood records to check out… Yep this one's dedicated to all the lovers and music lovers out there. Enjoy the love with what might be the best selection of original Bollywood vinyl in Australia!

Grant Phabao Live Soul System - Dubtape Vol.2

Grant Phabao Live Soul System - Dubtape Vol.2
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-01-21

After producing albums and hit singles with Studio One's legends The Lone Ranger, Carlton Livingston, The Jays, The Silvertones, Parisian dubmeister Grant Phabao was given the Jamaican stamp of approval of "the producer who brings back the original Lee Perry and King Tubby sounds with a modern twist". Phabao expanded his output with roots jamaican remixes for artists such as Alice Russell, Nostalgia 77 or Quantic (Tru Thoughts), Ty (Big Dada), George Clinton… and spectacular mashups & bootlegs: Cee-Lo, Q-Tip, Roots Manuva, Erykah Badu, Jurassic 5, Marvin Gaye, among others, were given the unique Grant Phabao treatment for extended dancefloor pleasure! He's now presenting his first live dub mixing experience with the help of long time collaborator DJ The Dreadless Soldier (aka Erik Rug), the GRANT PHABAO SOUL SYSTEM, a DJ set spiced up with hip hop, dub and a whole lot of echo.
