Loik - AfroTropik

Loik - AfroTropik
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2016-12-30

A one hour-long, vinyl-only selection, with forgotten classics and nuggets to be (re)discovered. The mix starts with some Afrofunk (Antoinette Konan, Pat ‘Ndoye, Jean Guéhi); before diving down into the irresistible Cape Verdian pulse: groovy, psych, roots, pop, even nu disco; and closing in Haiti with Claudette & Ti Pierre’s sono mondiale anthem. Loik has been digging deep into his vinyl collection to carefully cook this podcast for heating up the coming long winter nights.

Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1981 - Standards, Versions and Revamps Vol.22
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2016-11-02

From a groovy/tropical point of view, Interesting cover songs from 1981 weren't that easy to find. The sound of Sly & Robbie, present twice in this mix (with productions for The Tamlins or Bits & Pieces), was an obvious choice, but we've also dug up for you some classic soul, early electro/hip hop, New Orleans backbeat, deep reggae and leftfield grooves. Even with the hardest constraints, the Paris DJs sound rises like a phoenix everytime (no Conchita pun intended).

Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1980 - Standards, Versions and Revamps Vol.21
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2016-09-23

Here we are in the deep sea of the 1980s hunting for cool and groovy cover songs. The Betino's Record Store in Paris pointed us towards Gnonnas Pedro's version of James Brown 'I Got You' but we we had mixed and mastered the selection a few hours earlier so it didn't make the cut. Someone on facebook asked if we played Snatch's version of 'Another Brick In The Wall' but we didn't. Digging into this decade is a different kind of fun than the 60s or the 70s, and we think we managed to find some very exciting numbers. You'll let us know what you think. And suggestions for 1981 and 1982 are more than welcome!

Paris DJs Soundsystem - Jazz For Tiziano

Paris DJs Soundsystem - Jazz For Tiziano
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2016-09-05

Tiziano was one of the top backers of Paris DJs' third crowdfunding campaign during the summer of 2015. He choose the reward with the 15 CDs and the exclusive mix, saying: "I like the music you offer and the idea of getting an exclusive cooked just for me got me interested. I like jazz and experimental music, I grew up with rock. I ESPECIALLY like trumper (Jon Hassel, Paolo Fresu, Mark Isham, Miles Davis of course, etc.). So if you could blend your selections with some trumpet, some jazz…". Damn! This one was not easy. It took us months to figure out something fitting those directions, while still being essentially a Paris DJs thing. Thankfully, Tiziano was patient, and loved the mix. He also gladly accepted that we share an mp3 of it with the rest of the world, so here you go. Enjoy!

Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1979 - Standards, Versions and Revamps Vol.20
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2016-08-12

20 years already! This series of mixes, of cover songs recorded or released during the same year, started with 1960, and we've now reached 1979! The 1960s and the 1970s have been fully covered — pun intended. For this closing chapter on the seventies, we've been diggin' heavily into Jamaican music once again, with reggae adaptations of The Drifters, Sam Theard, Ann Peebles or Bob Dylan, and a reggae/disco take on a Chic classic. But there's also a slowed-down but very groovy version of The Crusaders' hit 'Street Life', a really tight and soulful cover of Hot Chocolate, the traditional 'Misirlou' in nearly-cheesy disco fashion, a James Brown cover (there's always at least a cool one every year), Marvin Gaye revisited in punk-funk mode, or Lalo Schifrin on a worldbeat tip! We even cheated a bit since the last one, 'Mission Impossible' by Lizzy Mercier Descloux, extracted from a recent reissue of her 1979 album 'Press Color', was actually recorded at Carnegie Hall Studio in NY in 1980 — hinting at what's coming next : the 80s!!

Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1978 - Standards, Versions and Revamps Vol.19
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2016-04-17

Damn things are not getting easier as I'm approaching the 1980s. In 1978 there's just SO MUCH of disco in the groovy records. There's also a vast amount of punk and pop/rock released of course, but that's not really what we're about in this series of mixes here. 1978 was not that bad a year, I could list many classic albums out by the likes of Frank Zappa, Elvis Costello, Bob Marley, Little Feat, The Band, Talking Heads, Rick James, Kraftwerk, Herbie Hancock, Chic, Devo, The Clash or even Sun Ra, for example, but the main event is clearly happening on the P-Funk side of things, with great LPs from Funkadelic, Parliament, Brides Of Funkenstein, Parlet , Bernie Worrell or Bootsy Collins, all released in 1978. You'll feel it in this selection of cool covers from the year, which includes P-Funk spin off act Parlet covering Parliament-Funkadelic vocalist Fuzzy Haskins' "Cookie Jar" (later recorded by Prince), R&B/soul group The Dells covering Parliament's "All Your Goodies Are Gone", and funk band Platinum Hook covering Funkadelic's "Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On". Definitively, 1978 was the year of the P!!

Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1977 - Standards, Versions & Revamps Vol.18

Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1977 - Standards, Versions and Revamps Vol.18
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2016-04-18

1977 was the year of the Punk explosion, but it was also the year the famous Studio 54 opened in New York. Elvis Presley died during the summer, Marc Bolan followed in september, and "Saturday Night Fever" was released at the end of the year. On the albums front, besides the obvious P-Funk gems (Parliament, Bootsy Collins, Eddie Hazel), there were Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, The Clash, Kraftwerk, The Talking Heads and Bob Marley. The times were A-changing once again… As for album, cool covers were getting scarce and Kiss was the most popular band in the USA. But that didn't stop us from gathering a full hour of handpicked funky and soulful versions of classics, all released during 1977!!

Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1976 - Standards, Versions & Revamps Vol.17

Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1976 - Standards, Versions and Revamps Vol.17
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2016-04-05

Some say that 1976 wasn't the best year for music. They might be forgetting many great recordings from the likes of Marvin Gaye ('I Want You'), Steely Dan ('The Royal Scam'), Grateful Dead ('Steal your Face'), Parliament ('The Clones Of Dr. Funkenstein'), Funkadelic ('Tales of Kidd Funkadelic', 'Hardcore Jollies'), Led Zeppelin ('The Song Remains The Same'), Zappa ('Zoot Allures'), Stevie Wonder ('Songs In The Key Of Life'), Bootsy Collins ('Stretchin Out In Bootsy's Rubber Band')... It was also the year punk incubated and rap was created. Disco was everywhere and not only in clubs anymore, but reggae had also become extremely popular, and many classic records in the genre were released, for example by Burning Spear ('Garvey's Ghost', 'Man In The Hills'), Bob Marley and The Wailers ('Rastaman Vibration'), Bunny Wailer ('Blackheart Man') or Lee Perry and The Upsetters ('Super Ape')... If 1976 wasn't the best, and yes there is a lot to forget, it was still a very cool year to dig for music!

Paris DJs Soundsystem - African Mashed Potato Popcorn Vol.10

Paris DJs Soundsystem African Mashed Potato Popcorn Vol.10 - When Afrobeat Meets Jazz
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2016-03-14

This mix was cooked with only one person in mind: Collen Chandler, from Liverpool, who supported our 15 CDs anthology crowdfunding campaign and asked us to try on a when afrobeat meets jazz theme, mixing the modern & old with an emphasis on the modern. While preparing the selection, we found out this new mix fitted perfectly our decade-old 'African Mashed Potato Popcorn' series! Thankfully, Collen loved the mix, and let us share it with the rest of the world, so here's a new selection of African and African-influenced grooves from the past and the present. You might recognize some familiar faces, Dexter Story who came to DJ with us recently in Paris, Karl Hector who's done a handful of exclusive mixes for Paris DJs, a production from his brother on his own Philophon label, German singstress Bajka who've we been heavily supporting along the years, Berlin afrojazzfunksters Onom Agemo & The Disco Jumpers who first appeared on a Paris DJs compilation, Black Flower's afrojazz from Belgium, led by our friend Nathan Daems, the amazing Golden Dawn Arkestra from Austin, Texas, produced by Adrian Quesada, NYC's afrofunksters Ikebe Shakedown, or Dr. Lonnie Smith, who's back 45 years later on Blue Note with a truly great album….

Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1974 - Standards, Versions and Revamps Vol.15
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2016-01-28

The year is 1974. Early disco is upon the music scene. Pre-selections of cool records with interesting cover songs are starting to become tighter. But no worry! The diggin craze (also called "Dig-Fu" in our inner circle) is infinite. The more music you know, the more you have to discover. Jazz, soul, reggae, funk, library music, New Orleans backbeat, fusion, Nigerian Afro-rock… there's no real big surprise here, just cool versions of classics with a whole lot of feeling, carefully handpicked.
Note : We played a sneak preview of this mix at our weekly 'Tour Operator' gig at Le Pigalle Hotel on january 28, just before Erik Rug and Grant Phabao's DJ set.

A new year starts and we can't be thankful enough for everyone who supported us last year. Now 2016 is here, rather exciting for Paris DJs. Many projects are in the vaults, quite ready to be released, including albums from Etienne de la Sayette, RacecaR or the Grant Phabao Afrofunk Arkestra. Also lots of new singles and remixes, of course. Some dub experiments should see the light too. And mixes of course!
