Ghost Writerz - Sharp And Ready Selection

Ghost Writerz - Sharp And Ready Selection
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2014-11-30

While a majority of labels shift their focus on reissues (with no production costs) and live bands (with a simple old school business model: touring and selling merch), there still are a few out there who do the real job: digging "in the now", finding, signing new artists and releasing new productions. Brighton's finest Tru Thoughts is one of those and it's already been going on for 15 years now… Reason enough for Paris DJs to celebrate the label's 15th anniversary, by inviting four of their artists to do an exclusive mix, starting with UK Sound System Culture sensation Ghost Writerz. The duo is the first signing of Tru Thoughts brand new sub-label Sharp and Ready, designed to spotlight the "new wave" of artists on the UK sound system scene...

"Sharp And Ready is the Sound System Culture arm of Tru Thoughts recordings. A platform for the New Wave of UK Sound System Culture, a coalescing of influences and heritage - from Reggae through Hip Hop and Jungle - and the distinct sonic and societal markers of our time, into something wholly new, carried forward by a growing contingent of passionate, talented artists and brought to you by one of the UK's most respected independent labels." (sharpandready.com)

Besides Quantic and DJ Vadim, this mix was for us a source of a lot of new discoveries. Paris DJs is, obviously, based in Paris, and we don't have any (other) media about groovy music over here in France so it's hard to find out about new bands. The reggae/dub/soundsystem scene has always been big in the UK, but it has been years if not decades since it started getting THAT interesting again. This mix sets things right. We've added many links (see below) for all the artists featured here, don't hesitate to go check their streams and social pages if you like what your hear… and be sure to be back next week for the second part of this quadrilogy of mixes celebrating Tru Thoughts' 15th anniversary!

Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1964 - Standards Versions and Revamps Vol.5
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2014-11-03

This idea of doing a loooong series of mixes covering half a century of music came to us more nearly two years ago. After so many 'Molesting Laura mixes and a blast of a dozen new mixes of covers at then end of 2012, we couldn't just stop there. Mixes of cover songs are cool by essence, since they're mostly made of familar tunes, but we thought of a twist: let's sort them out by year. Let's do a mix of cover songs for each year, starting in… ok let's say 1960. Now let's fast-forward to mid-november 2014 and we're already at the fifth volume in this Paris DJs series of selections of covers from the same year - this one from songs which happened in 1964.
As promised last week, we haven't forgotten to go dig into Jamaican releases this time, hence the appearance of Lee Perry, Prince Buster or Roland Alphonso backed by The Skatalites, and Carlos Malcolm with His Afro Jamaican Rhythms… tackling some classics into ska! You'll also get a heavy dose of soul with Alvin Robinson, Roosevelt Grier, Dusty Springfield, Quincy Jones, Shirley Ellis or Don Gardner (who's just made the news with a Tramp Records compilation!). Plus a bit of Serge Gainsbourg, who was borrowing from Nigerian percussion player Olatunji Babatunde at the time, with new lyrics… Of course this not the ultimate mix of cover songs from 1964, just a quick draw we made from the records in our vaults - which might explain the mostly soul & ska flavors in here!

Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1963 - Standards Versions and Revamps Vol.4
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2014-11-03

Fourth volume in our series of selections of covers from the same period, this mix focuses on the year 1963, gathering Jazz, Soul, Folk, Latin, French Chanson, and Rhythm and Blues interpretations of hits from the past of that time. Of course after 1960, 1961 and 1962, it's not a big big surprise to our listeners, and some cool versions of standards will give a feeling of a swim in charted waters: 'Hallelujah I Love Her So', 'Take Five', 'Comin Home Baby', 'Fever'… We tried our best to go diggin' further (without replaying tunes already aired on the Paris DJs podcast), and if this for sure is NOT a definitive statement of what a cover was then, this mix is at least a cool snapshot of some of that concept for the year 1963. The selection could have included one or two reggae/ska thingies though… we'll try not to forget the Jamaican island next time!
