WaaterproOf and ZjAk - One hour Mix 100% Poly-Rythmo
WaaterproOf and ZjAk - One hour Mix 100% Poly-Rythmo
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2009-08-31

SPECIAL PARIS DJS MIX number 200 !! ONE HOUR LONG !!!

The Tout Puissant Orchestre de Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou Benin will be playing tomorrow night at the Jazz A La Villette festival along with Amadou and Mariam (featuring guests Romeo and Michele Stodart from The Magic Numbers), Seun Kuti and DJ RKK (Radio Nova) - don't miss this show!!

Anyone deeply into old school African music must have already stumbled upon the Jam Magica blog and its growing index of the Orchestre de Poly-Rythmo complete discography. I go there every month at least, and when I saw that Afrofunk collector ZjAk with the help of his friend WaaterproOf had done a one hour Poly-Rythmo mix for Radio Grenouille in Marseilles, I asked them to send us a high-quality version for us to podcast on Paris DJs, the day right before the Paris show. They even re-recorded the mix to insure the best possible quality. It's all rare dusty 45s and old LPs selected and mixed with love, and remastered with care by Grant Phabao of course. Enjoy!

Paris DJs Soundsystem - Who Is Molesting Laura ? (part 8)
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2009-08-26

We received many messages of hope that we'd keep on accosting, assailling, abusing, disturbing and more maltreating of our dear Laura. Here's the JAZZ take on the story. If you're into tasty covers of classics, into Jazz or even into Stevie or Sly Stone, you should find the kind of stuff you enjoy, in this soundtrack to the life of a perpetually molested girl!

Tracklisting :

03. Dennis Chambers - In Time
(from 'Outbreak' album, 2002 / ESC Records)
The funk and jazz-rock drums virtuoso kills it all here with this non-revolutionnary but technically flawless Sly and The Family Stone cover.

05. Charles Kynard - Superstition
(from 'Your Mama Don't Dance' album, 1973 / Mainstream)
The same Stevie cover, taken from another fantastic album, and featuring an incredible set of musicians too: Chuck Rainey on bass, Arthur Adams on guitar, Paul Humphreys on drums, George Bohannon on trombone, and, of course, the mighty Charles Kynard on organ. Make it funky jazz!

Zamali - The Paris DJs Way To Funk
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2009-08-24

Many times in the past people have come to me while I was deejaying asking for some Michael Jackson track. A favorite surprise of mine was to play them Zamali's bootleg remix ABC In Central Park (available on Grant Phabao and Djouls are Molesting Laura Vol.13). This Belgium DJ has been flooding the web with dope remixes and productions and he kindly delivered this party-style Dancefloor mix, recorded live with two turntables.

Paris DJs Soundsystem - Who Is Molesting Laura ? (part 7)
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2009-08-22

T.I.M.E.C. honchos Grant Phabao and Djouls have recorded at least half a dozen more Molesting Laura episodes for this podcast series of the Paris DJs Soundsystem. This new one is centered around instrumental interpretations of famous hits and classics. Once again, please leave a comment on the the Paris DJs blog if you want us to stop molesting the dear Laura. If on the other hand you enjoy the tasty selection of covers the Paris DJs Soundsystem are gathering every month... Then just leave a message of hope that we'll keep Molesting Laura on and on and on and on (and on)...

Tracklisting :

01. Robert Walter - Rivers of Babylon
(from 'Cure All' album, 2008 / Palmetto Records)
Rare jazz-lounge cover of The Melodians classic.
more info on parisdjs.com

02. Certain Lions and Tigers - Fever
(from 'El Soul Condor' album, 1970 / Polydor)
Fantastic cover of the Little Willie John classic popularized by Peggy Lee, recently reissued on Peter Herbolzheimer's Big Band Man (4xCD boxset).
more info on dustygroove.com

03. Ed Maciel E Sua Orquestra - Les Cornichons
(from 'Na Onda' album, 1966 / London Records)
Organic and brassy cover of Nino Ferrer, if anyone's got the Volumes 4/6/7/8/9/10 or 11 of the Na Onda series from Ed Maciel please share...
more info on loronix.blogspot.com

04. The Howard Roberts Quartet - I Say A Little Prayer
(from 'Out Of Sight' album, 1968 / Capitol)
Cheesy jazz guitar cover of Burt Bacharach and Hal David's classic written for Dionne Warwick, but the album's artwork is lovely and the melody still to die for.
more info on guitarchives.com

05. Shawn Lee's Ping Pong Orchestra - My Favorite Things
(from 'A Very Ping Pong Christmas' album, 2007 / Ubiquity Records)
Richard Rodgers wrote this standard for the 1959 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The Sound of Music, then Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass made a big hit with it in 1968 and the song became a jazz standard for John Coltrane and many others. Shawn Lee's version... well it's Shawn Lee and you should be a fan like we are!

06. Ultimate Breaks and Beats - Think(About It)
(James Brown cover, from 'Ultimate Breaks and Beats' album, 2008 / Traffic Entertainment)
The 'instrumental covers of famous breakbeats' concept album doesn't work well over one hour, even with Leon Michels and friends playing, but most tracks picked in there independently are neo-classics just like this James Brown cover so don't even hesitate.
more info on parisdjs.com

07. Hot Fingers Jackson and The Soul Organ-Isation - Ode To Billy Joe
(from 'Hammond Explosion' album, 1968 / Columbia)
One may wonder why Bobby Gentry's original from 1967 became such a huge hit, but won't guess as to why we've chosen this groovy lounge instrumental cover by German organist Dieter Reith (under a pseudonym).
more info on wikipedia.com

08. The Quantic Soul Orchestra - Get A Move On (Alternate Mix)
(from 'Tru Thoughts Covers' compilation, 2009 / Tru Thoughts Recordings)
Once more, this is NOT a Mr Scruff cover since his Get a Move On is really a remix of Moondog's Bird Lament. The Quantic Soul Orchestra alternate take, from Tru Thoughts' recent collection of covers, definitively rocks, though.
more info on parisdjs.com

09. Cookin' On 3 Burners - Cars
(Gary Numan cover, from 'Soul Messin' album, 2009 / Freestyle Records)
The Bamboos's guitarist Lance Ferguson also plays in this Australian hammond trio, steaming funk recordings since 1997. Their cover of Gary Numan's 80s synth-pop hit tears the roof off in style: 21st century caffeine funk, tight like a virgin's ass!
more info on parisdjs.com

10. Dojo Cuts feat. Roxie Ray - Uptight
(Stevie Wonder cover, from 'Dojo Cuts feat. Roxie Ray' album, 2009 / Record Kicks)
We conclude this mix with another Australian funk band and their raw, live and still soulful take on Stevie Wonder's classic.

Paris DJs Soundsystem - 21st Century Latin Vol.4
Paris DJs Soundstem - 21st Century Latin Vol.4 (Latin Funk)
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C., 2009-08-20

The Latin scene is vibrant in Europe. Quantic offered at the beginning of the summer a fantastic new album on a Columbian tip. Don't miss his live show with his Combo Barbaro in Paris on September 12 (Le Bataclan). Electic new albums from Black Grass and Dub Pistols are filled with marvels in all styles - latin grooves included. Palov and Mishkin come from Greece and their latest CD has been spinning all summer in our stereos. Skeleton is the new project from Brighton's jazz master Nostalgia 77, rising the bar with each new release. An afro-latin piece will first be available on the upcoming Impossible Ark compilation out early october via Unfold/Tru Thoughts. Spain is here too with an extract from the vibrant Achilifunk remix compilation from Lovemonk records. We'll def play more tracks from this one in the future! More spanish soul jazz vibes from Spain are featured with The Jivers and their swinging song taken from the latest Jazz and Milk Records compilation EP. I've grown to the habit of buying this German label's vinyl release systematically and haven't been disappointed yet. More German latin funkiness comes next from Una Mas Trio and Mo' Horizons, both on the Agogo label, another one to be followed closely. We close the mix as we started it, with an artist from Brighton, Black Grass - his third album is so full of hits I regret buying it on CD only.
...More '21st Century Latin' music to come soon in these pages...

Paris DJs Soundsystem - Who Is Molesting Laura ? (part 6)
Paris DJs Soundsystem - Who Is Molesting Laura ? (part 6)
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2009-08-16

This new Molesting Laura episode is clearly aiming for the FUNK, with James, Sly and Stevie covers urging you to shake that ass!
A big thanks to Freestyle Records for releasing so many good records, sending us some promos and letting us play those in our mixes!

We couldn't resist playing the heavy hitter track from the Grits album here, so full of inspiration... The Baker Brothers upcoming collection of covers is quite a treat too and we could have picked many other tracks from their 5th album for this mix. French keyboard maestro Soul Sugar is a friend and collaborator of ours but even if it wasn't the case we would still praise him for his upcoming album Nothing But The Truth which has been spinning an awful lot in our stereo this summer. Deep, soulful and groovy, it should please MANY funk and jazz lovers. Israeli funk band The Apples stormed the dancefloors earlier this year with their fantastic Snap cover, we can't wait for their new album now (the 4th one I think)... And that's only a few cos there are many more new releases to come on the Freestyle label, leading the way for the worldwide deep funk scene these days.

Tracklisting :

01. The Invaders - Big Payback
(from 'Jump Back: Imitations, Interpolations & The Inspiration Of James Brown' compilation, 2008 / Le Smoke Disque)
more info on discogs.com
A James Brown classic covered with a psychedelic funk vibe. Anyone knows when/where this was first released?

02. The Baker Brothers - If You Want Me To Stay
(from 'Avid Sounds' album, 2009 / Freestyle)
more info on parisdjs.com
Superb soulful cover of Sly & The Family Stone by Bournemouth's grooviest funk trio.

03. Peter Herbolzheimer Rhythm Combination & Brass & Inga Rumpf - Superstition
(from 'Hip Walk' album, 1976 / Polydor)

Funky fusion cover or Stevie Wonder. Think of Germany in the mid-70s, with a stellar European line-up of musicians...

04. Soul Sugar - Play It Back
(from 'Nothing But The Truth' album, 2009 / Freestyle)
more info on parisdjs.com
A trippy, moody, swampy, soulful, funky and rather amazing cover of Lonnie Smith from France finest' keys/Hammond player. Get the album in September!!

06. Soopasoul - It's Just Begun
(from 'Twin Stix' album, 2009 / Jalapeno)
more info on soopasoul.com, myspace.com/soopasoul

07. The Grits - Boom Boom
(from 'The Grits' album, 2008 / Freestyle)
more info on parisdjs.com
Their Fabulous Counts cover of Jan Jan is impressive but not as much as this original, an instant classic of psychedelic dancefloor funk. The rest of the album is as good, get it on vinyl - I did!

08. Dillard Crume and The Soul Rockers - Mother Popcorn
(James Brown cover, from 'Singing The Hits of Today' album, 1969 / Alshire)
more info on dillardcrume.tripod.com or on thingsstuffandmusic.blogspot.com
At the end of the 60s gospel singer Dilard Crume was into a great James Brown-inspired funk/soul spirit. There are even rumors of Maceo Parker playing on this JB cover...
