Paris DJs Soundsystem presents Bajka's Lyrical Funk
Paris DJs Soundsystem presents Bajka's Lyrical Funk
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C., 2009-01-25

I've been a long time Poets Of Rhythm addict (check their discography on parisdjs.com), I discovered Bajka because of tracks she recorded with the Poets backing her. I met Gerald Jazzman and Tom Strauch (Switchstance Recordings) who told me more and pointed me towards a tracks I didn't know about and stuff she had recorded recently. I was quite impressed... as much as I have been with nearly everything she recorded so far!

Not many people know about Bajka here in France, from what I've been asking around. A few say "Bonobo?" (she was on the "Days To Come" album released by Ninja Tune in 2006) but most don't even get she was on the fantastic Radio Citizen album released the same year on Ubiquity - among many other appearances...

I tried my selection to a few connoiseurs, and they all were very happy to discover a new voice they hadn't heard about, which they absolutly loved too instantly. The Billy Holiday connection is always the first to come to mind, but then there are other reactions too...

So I thought "yeah let's do that, a mix about Bajka, so that many others may know about her, that's what we're really about with all this website thing, new incredible talents, worldwide artists, 21st century jazz, soul, funk and reggae!!

Grant Phabao and Djouls - 21st Century Afro Vol.3
Grant Phabao and Djouls - 21st Century Afro Vol.3
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C., 2009-01-14

This 3rd volume of 21st Century African music begins in Asheville, North Carolina (USA) with The Afromotive, fusing Afrobeat, Funk and improvisation. Did someone say 'jamband'? The trombone/trumpet player Brian Bender (from New England, USA) could easily fit in that category, since he's been playing with numerous bands across the globe, from latin jazz, to samba reggae, african, calypso, klezmer, celtic, arabic, turkish, middle eastern, jazz, blues, dixieland, afrobeat and funk! Next we have Nomo from Michigan, USA, with an extract from their latest album, 'Ghost Rock', one of the most innovative records of 2008, heavily mixing Krautrock with Afrobeat, Funk and Jazz. We then come back to some HUGE recent afrofunk albums, the Karl Hector and The Malcouns one (from Germany) and the second Budos Band long player (New York, USA). We're kinda pushing those records a lot and proud of doing so. Buy them if you still haven't!! We close this selection with Chicago Afrobeat Project from Chicago, USA, with a track taken from '(A) Move To Silent Unrest', their latest and best album yet, a true crossover of Afrobeat and Jazz.

01. The Afromotive - One Way Go

Guido - Everybody's Talking Heads, part 1
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) Goldrush, 2009-01-11

A tribute to Talking Heads
Ok, so now, everybody knows Talking Heads, everybody's a fan. But how deep can you go into their discography? How crazy can you go digging for solo tracks and produced-by songs? How much time can you lose trying to figure out which guitar is Byrne's on the Fun Boy Three album or where does Harrison sing on the Violent Femmes album? Take a big breath and check this whole half hour inside the Heads'heads. You'll hear rare stuff, familiar tunes and forgotten tracks. Follow this journey into a world of fantastic rhythms, violent guitars and meaningful lyrics. This is only the beginning: part 2 is on its way. And if you feel like your favorite song is missing, this is because we all know it.

(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C., 2009-01-07

Latin music has always been a favorite for us. We could talk for hours about Deodato, Marcos Valle and so many others. We even managed to produce an 'Electronic Bossa and Psychedelic Soul Samba' album a few years ago with Captain Detendu... Our '21st Century Latin' series is in the same vein of latinized electronics, latin dub, electro-colombian psychedelics, latin jazz and funk... We're diggin' here! If you enjoy those new latin grooves from Germany (Mr Confuse, Bahama Soul Club), Spain (Mantecao), Sweden (Dubben), USA (Ocote Soul Sounds, Greenwood Rhythm Coalition) and UK (Quantic, Sidestepper), don't forget to be back on February 11th for an explosive party-style 4th volume!
