Paris DJs Soundsystem - Who Is Molesting Laura ? (Part 10)
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2009-10-12

Turn on, tune in and drop out with this out-of-ordinary selection of psychedelic covers. Expect musical hallucinations, changes of perception on classic tracks you thought you knew, adventitious synesthesia, an altered state of awareness of pop culture, some mystical rediscovery of your inner well-being, and a bit of slight psychosis concerning this Molesting Laura series and its broad use of music covers. This is heavy shit for the cultural and intellectual elite of Paris DJs' secret order. Is there anybody out there?

Zamali - The Paris DJs Way To Funk
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2009-08-24

Many times in the past people have come to me while I was deejaying asking for some Michael Jackson track. Paris DJs Soundsystem - Who Is Molesting Laura ? (part 7)
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2009-08-22

T.I.M.E.C. honchos Grant Phabao and Djouls have recorded at least half a dozen more Molesting Laura episodes for this podcast series of the Paris DJs Soundsystem. This new one is centered around instrumental interpretations of famous hits and classics. Once again, please leave a comment on the the Paris DJs blog if you want us to stop molesting the dear Laura. If on the other hand you enjoy the tasty selection of covers the Paris DJs Soundsystem are gathering every month... Then just leave a message of hope that we'll keep Molesting Laura on and on and on and on (and on)...

Tracklisting :

01. Robert Walter - Rivers of Babylon
(from 'Cure All' album, 2008 / Palmetto Records)
Rare jazz-lounge cover of The Melodians classic.
more info on parisdjs.com

02. Certain Lions and Tigers - Fever
(from 'El Soul Condor' album, 1970 / Polydor)
Fantastic cover of the Little Willie John classic popularized by Peggy Lee, recently reissued on Peter Herbolzheimer's Big Band Man (4xCD boxset).
more info on dustygroove.com

03. Ed Maciel E Sua Orquestra - Les Cornichons
(from 'Na Onda' album, 1966 / London Records)
Organic and brassy cover of Nino Ferrer, if anyone's got the Volumes 4/6/7/8/9/10 or 11 of the Na Onda series from Ed Maciel please share...
more info on loronix.blogspot.com

04. The Howard Roberts Quartet - I Say A Little Prayer
(from 'Out Of Sight' album, 1968 / Capitol)
Cheesy jazz guitar cover of Burt Bacharach and Hal David's classic written for Dionne Warwick, but the album's artwork is lovely and the melody still to die for.
more info on guitarchives.com

05. Shawn Lee's Ping Pong Orchestra - My Favorite Things
(from 'A Very Ping Pong Christmas' album, 2007 / Ubiquity Records)
Richard Rodgers wrote this standard for the 1959 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The Sound of Music, then Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass made a big hit with it in 1968 and the song became a jazz standard for John Coltrane and many others. Shawn Lee's version... well it's Shawn Lee and you should be a fan like we are!
more info on parisdjs.com or on wikipedia.org

06. Ultimate Breaks and Beats - Think(About It)
(James Brown cover, from 'Ultimate Breaks and Beats' album, 2008 / Traffic Entertainment)
The 'instrumental covers of famous breakbeats' concept album doesn't work well over one hour, even with Leon Michels and friends playing, but most tracks picked in there independently are neo-classics just like this James Brown cover so don't even hesitate.
more info on parisdjs.com

07. Hot Fingers Jackson and The Soul Organ-Isation - Ode To Billy Joe
(from 'Hammond Explosion' album, 1968 / Columbia)
One may wonder why Bobby Gentry's original from 1967 became such a huge hit, but won't guess as to why we've chosen this groovy lounge instrumental cover by German organist Dieter Reith (under a pseudonym).
more info on wikipedia.com

08. The Quantic Soul Orchestra - Get A Move On (Alternate Mix)
(from 'Tru Thoughts Covers' compilation, 2009 / Tru Thoughts Recordings)
Once more, this is NOT a Mr Scruff cover since his Get a Move On is really a remix of Moondog's Bird Lament. The Quantic Soul Orchestra alternate take, from Tru Thoughts' recent collection of covers, definitively rocks, though.
more info on parisdjs.com

09. Cookin' On 3 Burners - Cars
(Gary Numan cover, from 'Soul Messin' album, 2009 / Freestyle Records)
The Bamboos's guitarist Lance Ferguson also plays in this Australian hammond trio, steaming funk recordings since 1997. Their cover of Gary Numan's 80s synth-pop hit tears the roof off in style: 21st century caffeine funk, tight like a virgin's ass!
more info on parisdjs.com

10. Dojo Cuts feat. Roxie Ray - Uptight
(Stevie Wonder cover, from 'Dojo Cuts feat. Roxie Ray' album, 2009 / Record Kicks)
We conclude this mix with another Australian funk band and their raw, live and still soulful take on Stevie Wonder's classic.

Paris DJs Soundstem - 21st Century Latin Vol.4 (Latin Funk)
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C., 2009-08-20

The Latin scene is vibrant in Europe. Quantic offered at the beginning of the summer a fantastic new album on a Columbian tip. Don't miss his live show with his Combo Barbaro in Paris on September 12 (Le Bataclan). Electic new albums from Black Grass and Dub Pistols are filled with marvels in all styles - latin grooves included. Palov and Mishkin come from Greece and their latest CD has been spinning all summer in our stereos. Skeleton is the new project from Brighton's jazz master Nostalgia 77, rising the bar with each new release. An afro-latin piece will first be available on the upcoming Impossible Ark compilation out early october via Unfold/Tru Thoughts. Spain is here too with an extract from the vibrant Achilifunk remix compilation from Lovemonk records. We'll def play more tracks from this one in the future! More spanish soul jazz vibes from Spain are featured with The Jivers and their swinging song taken from the latest Jazz and Milk Records compilation EP. I've grown to the habit of buying this German label's vinyl release systematically and haven't been disappointed yet. More German latin funkiness comes next from Una Mas Trio and Mo' Horizons, both on the Agogo label, another one to be followed closely. We close the mix as we started it, with an artist from Brighton, Black Grass - his third album is so full of hits I regret buying it on CD only.
...More '21st Century Latin' music to come soon in these pages...

Paris DJs Soundsystem - Who Is Molesting Laura ? (part 6)
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2009-08-16

This new Molesting Laura episode is clearly aiming for the FUNK, with James, Sly and Stevie covers urging you to shake that ass!
A big thanks to Freestyle Records for releasing so many good records, sending us some promos and letting us play those in our mixes!

We couldn't resist playing the heavy hitter track from the Grits album here, so full of inspiration... The Baker Brothers upcoming collection of covers is quite a treat too and we could have picked many other tracks from their 5th album for this mix. French keyboard maestro Soul Sugar is a friend and collaborator of ours but even if it wasn't the case we would still praise him for his upcoming album Nothing But The Truth which has been spinning an awful lot in our stereo this summer. Deep, soulful and groovy, it should please MANY funk and jazz lovers. Israeli funk band The Apples stormed the dancefloors earlier this year with their fantastic Snap cover, we can't wait for their new album now (the 4th one I think)... And that's only a few cos there are many more new releases to come on the Freestyle label, leading the way for the worldwide deep funk scene these days.

Tracklisting :

01. The Invaders - Big Payback
(from 'Jump Back: Imitations, Interpolations & The Inspiration Of James Brown' compilation, 2008 / Le Smoke Disque)
more info on discogs.com
A James Brown classic covered with a psychedelic funk vibe. Anyone knows when/where this was first released?

02. The Baker Brothers - If You Want Me To Stay
(from 'Avid Sounds' album, 2009 / Freestyle)
more info on parisdjs.com
Superb soulful cover of Sly & The Family Stone by Bournemouth's grooviest funk trio.

03. Peter Herbolzheimer Rhythm Combination & Brass & Inga Rumpf - Superstition
(from 'Hip Walk' album, 1976 / Polydor)
more info on wikipedia.org
Funky fusion cover or Stevie Wonder. Think of Germany in the mid-70s, with a stellar European line-up of musicians...

04. Soul Sugar - Play It Back
(from 'Nothing But The Truth' album, 2009 / Freestyle)
more info on parisdjs.com
A trippy, moody, swampy, soulful, funky and rather amazing cover of Lonnie Smith from France finest' keys/Hammond player. Get the album in September!!

05. The Apples - The Power
(Snap cover, from 'The Power' 12 inch, 2009 / Freestyle)
more info on freestylerecords.co.uk or on myspace.com/theapplesmusic
In your face brassy funk cover of Snap! Another instant classic after their spectacular Rage Against The Machine Rhythm'n'Blues cover.

06. Soopasoul - It's Just Begun
(from 'Twin Stix' album, 2009 / Jalapeno)
more info on soopasoul.com, myspace.com/soopasoul
A heavy Jimmy Castor Bunch cover taken from an album over-filled with funk delights. jalapenorecords.com is now one of the labels to follow with a rooster consisting of Skeewiff, Kraak & Smaak, Smoove & Turrell, Soopasoul, Dr Rubberfunk and Radio Trip!!

07. The Grits - Boom Boom
(from 'The Grits' album, 2008 / Freestyle)
more info on parisdjs.com
Their Fabulous Counts cover of Jan Jan is impressive but not as much as this original, an instant classic of psychedelic dancefloor funk. The rest of the album is as good, get it on vinyl - I did!

08. Dillard Crume and The Soul Rockers - Mother Popcorn
(James Brown cover, from 'Singing The Hits of Today' album, 1969 / Alshire)
more info on dillardcrume.tripod.com or on thingsstuffandmusic.blogspot.com
At the end of the 60s gospel singer Dilard Crume was into a great James Brown-inspired funk/soul spirit. There are even rumors of Maceo Parker playing on this JB cover...

Paris DJs Soundsystem presents Sleep of Oldominion
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2009-06-30

If you were a hip-hop emcee who can spit lightening fast rhymes, would you call yourself Sleep? One of the founding members of the Northwest hip-hop crew Oldominion, Sleep is a Mexican emcee with rapid flows, superb breath control, and introspective rhymes. His name was inspired by a line in a Nas song (I never sleep because sleep is the cousin of death). He's totally one for beat conoisseurs and lyric addicts. His rapping is fast and complex, meter and flow changing mid-phrase, but always on time. If you're into Tonedeff, Hyeroglyphics, Del Da funky Homosapien, The Pharcyde, etc., it should definitively be your thing!

On the news front, Sleep's released today his third album, Hesitation Wounds, on Strange Famous Records, a new one in a series of 'must buy' records for all hip hop lovers, which include the fantastic Christopher from 2005 and the Combination Lock marvel from 2007 with Zelly Rock. Paris DJs Soundsystem - Do The Tighten Up
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2009-06-11

Tighten Up was a summer 1968 number one R'n'B and Pop hit single by Archie Bell and the Drells from Houston, Texas. It sold a million copies by May 1968. The song described an accompanying dance that the band had invented, also called the Tighten Up. It's one of the most addictive early funk tracks ever, and has been covered and played by everyone from Maceo Parker to The Bamboos since then. Here's a 30mn blended selection of our favourite funk and latin versions...

Paris DJs Soundsystem presents Hypnotic Brass Ensemble (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2009-05-29

This Hypnotic Brass Ensemble blew my mind the first time I heard them. I had seen some videos on YouTube but was finally able to grab two copy of their War/Mercury 10 inch at a local record store (thank you to the kind people selling Jazz and World at Gibert Joseph in Paris!)... The spare one went into the hands of Pierre from Souljazz Orchestra who got to see them onstage a few days after, opening for Mos Def in Amsterdam. He told me they totally stole the show, which I'm sure they did! Listening to their rare self-released albums (on CDR you can buy at their shows) or concert that are circulating on the Internet (you gotta check the one with Tony Allen!) can only mean one thing: the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble is currently one of the few killer live bands out there!! They'll be playing next Wednesday in Paris at the New Morning and we have 10 tickets to offer - be there or be square!

Paris DJs Soundsystem - Nearly Shadow
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2009-05-23

We've been cooking this mix for a long time, selecting its pieces slowly, one by one... The idea was to collect tracks that were obviously or not-so-obviously influenced by Dj Shadow's masterpiece and first album (on the defunct Mo' Wax label), Endtroducing. Some names spring to mind instantly, like Rjd2 (featured here), but we've tried to dig into many places, from the forgotten (DJ Bias of Lewis Parker fame, J-Walk who's second album will happen soon on Peacefrog, Manitoba now called Caribou), to the unknown in Europe (Mnemotrauma, Joe Beats from Non Prophets who's albums are just fantastic and who we had picked up for our This Is The New Hip Hop Thing CD compilation) and the bigger names (Gnarls Barkley). No Blockhead, no Wax Taylor, no DJ Cam, no UNKLE, no Diplo, no Aim... There surely are many other artists who've given props to that first Dj Shadow album and if you've got suggestions for a second volume don't hesitate to leave a comment!

Paris DJs Soundsystem - Who Is Molesting Laura ? (part 5)
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2009-05-06

This is not your usual Molesting Laura mix. Of course, it's all covers, some easy to recognize, some others not that obvious... That's because we've been specially digging in our vaults of American modern jazz. The kind of your never hear about over the Atlantic. The trip will take you from downtown New York (Medeski Martin and Wood) to New Orleans (Dirty Dozen Brass Band), from Brooklyn (Marco Benevento) to Tulsa (Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey), from San Diego (The Greyboy Allstars) to Bridgeport (Fuzz), back to Brooklyn (Soulive), and from Harlem (The Harlem Experiment) to San Francisco (Garaj Mahal)...

The Dirty Dozen Brass Band track is taken from their album produced by John Medeski, Buck Jump - New Orleans down home funky jazz at its best. The Marco Benevento one is from his 2009 album Me Not Me, an incredible set of covers done piano trio with sculpted sounds - with bassist Reed Mathis and drummers Matt Chamberlain and Andrew Barr, two of them being members of The Slip. Long-time readers will recognize them... Also, don't pass out on another piano trio, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, really mind-blowing. We've played a track from their latest album, Winterwood, which you can download for free on their site! Finally, this mix is an opportunity to talk about the Harlem Experiment album released on Ropeadope in 2007. It's just a monster album with the cream of NY uptown jazz musicians, fusing jazz, klezmer, salsa, soul, hip-hop and funk. One of the best new thing! we've heard this century.

This mix concludes a series of 15 Afro mixes (9 'African Mashed Potato Popcorn' mixtures and 6 '21st Century Afro' cookings) showcasing the current worldwide African music scene and a few bits from its roots. We've already praised before the incredible work of labels such as Soundway or Analog Africa, which appear here again but hey, their compilations were simply the best of last year!! Paris DJs Soundsystem - Is That Jazz?
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C., 2009-03-11

This mix started as a 'Hip Hop vs Jazz' mix and soon evolved into a '21st Century Swing' selection. But then we figured we really loved our b-boy caps and decided to go towards turntablism, playing around with jazz samples and more cut'n'paste of swinging beats. Props to Ali B of Air Recordings for releasing such quality 45s - we played one in this mix and licenced two others for the 'It's The New Hip Hop Thing' compilation out now (Vibrations/Harmonia Mundi)! More friendly UK labels are here too with Belleruche from Tru Thoughts and Mike-L from First Word. May they all keep on sending us such quality music...

Grant Phabao and Djouls - 21st Century Afro Vol.5
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C., 2009-03-09

Our world tour of African music continues in the form of a greatest hits selection from the last two years, with supa-dupa audio mastering by Grant Phabao (as usual). The Mehanan Street Band 'Make The Road By Walking' is an instant classic of instrumental funk and soul. We said that before. The Budos Band album 'Budos Band II' is an instant classic of cinematic afro and funk. That too. The Souljazz Orchestra album 'Manifesto' will be enjoyed by all fans of Fela and James Brown. Yep. We've been harrassing you about the SJO quite much. Have we already played and praised the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble brilliance in these pages? Think so. Didn't we already play a track from the Afro Influenced Funk Federation in our latest 21st Century Afro mix? Yes we did. And The Polyversal Souls is just another disguise for The Poets Of Rhythm (alias Karl Hector and The Malcouns), who are featured, like, every month here...

Lay down, close your eyes, and prepare yourself to travel from the USA to Nigeria, Togo and Europe with a 30mn rainbow of African soundscapes. Heavily featured here is Adrian Quesada who's been baffling us in 2008 with his afro-latin productions with Martin Perna (Antibalas) as Ocote Soul Sounds, as well as with his latin band Grupo Fantasma... We also love the Lighting Head album - you might remember the man from his dubbed Rockers Hi-Fi records or under his Biggabush alias... Completing this mix are rarities from Analog Africa, from Kon and Amir on BBE, french library stuff and a well-titled King Sunny Ade track.

Paris DJs Soundsystem presents Bajka's Lyrical Funk
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C., 2009-01-25

I've been a long time Poets Of Rhythm addict (check their discography on parisdjs.com), I discovered Bajka because of tracks she recorded with the Poets backing her. I met Gerald Jazzman and Tom Strauch (Switchstance Recordings) who told me more and pointed me towards a tracks I didn't know about and stuff she had recorded recently. I was quite impressed... as much as I have been with nearly everything she recorded so far!

Not many people know about Bajka here in France, from what I've been asking around. A few say "Bonobo?" (she was on the "Days To Come" album released by Ninja Tune in 2006) but most don't even get she was on the fantastic Radio Citizen album released the same year on Ubiquity - among many other appearances...

I tried my selection to a few connoiseurs, and they all were very happy to discover a new voice they hadn't heard about, which they absolutly loved too instantly. The Billy Holiday connection is always the first to come to mind, but then there are other reactions too...

So I thought "yeah let's do that, a mix about Bajka, so that many others may know about her, that's what we're really about with all this website thing, new incredible talents, worldwide artists, 21st century jazz, soul, funk and reggae!!

Tracklisting :
01. Radio Citizen - Nightingale

Grant Phabao and Djouls - 21st Century Afro Vol.3
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C., 2009-01-14

This 3rd volume of 21st Century African music begins in Asheville, North Carolina (USA) with The Afromotive, fusing Afrobeat, Funk and improvisation. Did someone say 'jamband'? The trombone/trumpet player Brian Bender (from New England, USA) could easily fit in that category, since he's been playing with numerous bands across the globe, from latin jazz, to samba reggae, african, calypso, klezmer, celtic, arabic, turkish, middle eastern, jazz, blues, dixieland, afrobeat and funk! Next we have Nomo from Michigan, USA, with an extract from their latest album, 'Ghost Rock', one of the most innovative records of 2008, heavily mixing Krautrock with Afrobeat, Funk and Jazz. We then come back to some HUGE recent afrofunk albums, the Karl Hector and The Malcouns one (from Germany) and the second Budos Band long player (New York, USA). We're kinda pushing those records a lot and proud of doing so. Buy them if you still haven't!! We close this selection with Chicago Afrobeat Project from Chicago, USA, with a track taken from '(A) Move To Silent Unrest', their latest and best album yet, a true crossover of Afrobeat and Jazz.

Grant Phabao and Djouls - 21st Century Afro Vol.2
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C., 2008-08-28

Info :
The second volume of our '21st Century Afro' series begins its trip with a peaceful afro-ethio-cuban trip from Lightning Head (alias Glyn 'Bigga' Bush/UK), extracted from the 12 inch taster of his upcoming album ('13 faces of Lightning Head'), then heads directly into heavy afro-kraut-jazz from Nomo, a collective from Michigan developing quite an unique sound. This 'Last Beat' is to be found on their powerful third album ('Ghost Rock'). After another instant afrosoul classic taken from The Budos Band's masterpiece, 'The Budos Band II', the mix navigates into supafunky ethio-jazz from The Lions, a Los Angeles collective of musicians you may also find playing in Breakestra, Connie Price and the Keystones, Orgone, Madlib's Sound Directions, Plant Life, Clutchy Hopkins, the Greyboy allstars... Their 'Jungle Struttin' album mixes reggae, ethiojazz, colombian and african grooves with soul, jazz, and funk! Things then get more focused with a devastating pamphlet from Seun Kuti and Egypt 80, one of the many available on his booming 'Many Things' album. The Shawn Lee apparition in this selection whichcomes afterwards is quite a surprise, but since the multi-instrumentalist genius decided to go global on his latest album ('Miles of Styles'), there's no reason to pass out on it. The same goes for the closing track, the hard-hitting Afrobeat drum-powered 'Platypus Strut' by Ohmega Watts - with the help of members of the Breakestra/Connie Price/Antibalas... it's a small world.

Grant Phabao and Djouls - 21st Century Afro
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C., 2008-08-18

[comment faire?/how to?]

Info :
In the next 6 weeks, Paris DJs activists Grant Phabao and Djouls will explore the many facets of 21st century African music, from Afrobeat to Afrofunk, from Afrosoul to Afrojazz, etc. This week's selection opens the salva with one of THE albums of the year, the second opus from The Budos Band, one you NEED - trust us. After a glimpse of the new Akoya Afrobeat Ensemble album, we're proud to present a new master of African music, Seun Kuti, bravely and proudly reaching out to his father with a bomb of a first album! A record we'll lookout for in the coming months is Antony Joseph and The Spasm Band's new one on french jazz label Heavenly Sweetness. You'll get here a taste of their recently released "La Diablesse EP", which hints at some serious afro-punk-jazz grooves. Concerning Kokolo, we've already told ya many times that their formula is flawless: funky afrobeat to dance to. Nuff' said. Nostalgia 77 is a UK artist with a huge soul-jazz sensibility, producing, remixing, releasing a LOT of stuff on Brighton's Tru Thoughts label and around. Grant Phabao got the chance to remix his cover of The White Stripes' 7 Nation Army featuring the incredible vocals of Alice Russell. It's available on his current "One Offs, Remixes and B-sides" compilation, along with an afrodeepfunk remix of his "Freedom" track, which we've included here. Closing this mix is former Fela guitarist/bassist Oghene Kologbo's latest single, extracted from his Fela Kuti homage album (available with two different covers for CD and vinyl). If you were in Paris this August (2008) you shouldn't have missed the 4 consecutive free Antibalas free shows in Parcs - Oghene was there guest-starring, offering some superb afrorock guitar solos... All in all 30mn is VERY short for afrobeat - but if you come back next week, we should have uploaded a new selection of the best 21st Century Afro Music you may find!! See ya there.

Grant Phabao & Djouls - Are Molesting Laura Vol.12
(MP3 Podcast on ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C., 2008-06-22

Info :
We hope you enjoyed the previous Molesting Laura mix of soul and funk reggae covers cos this one's in the same vein, with soul (a bit) and reggae (mostly) interpretations of songs by The Supremes, The Temptations, Barry White, The Bee Gees (!), Santana and a few selected others... Opening and closing this mix is our favorite UK soul singer Alice Russell, first covering The Supremes' My World Is Empty Without You with blue-eyed class, and then being remixed by our main man Grant Phabao, with the help of legendary Jamaican deejay The Lone Ranger adding some new lyrics in the mix. An incredible treat - don't miss the Lone Ranger with the Soul Stereo Soundsystem on June 27th at Les Nuits Zebrees (La Bellevilloise, Paris and on Radio Nova), and the following day opening for the Garance Reggae Festival at Le Zenith (Paris)!!

Grant Phabao and Djouls - Funk With Kids
(MP3 Podcast on ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C., 2008-01-19

Info :
A mix that's been nearly a year in preparation, a mix that started with the best 'Funk For Kids' dispositions, but ended in a 'Funk WITH Kids' way all grown-ups should enjoy too. We've been digging for months for those kiddie funk tracks, and thanks to the "ABC's of Kid Soul" compilation recently released by the Numero Group (ditributed by the friendly Differ-Ant people over here in France), we've finally managed to round up quite a surprising soundtrack of electic grooves with kids (or choirs of kids) singing...

Also a special big-up to Medeski Martin and Wood's new album of music for kids on Little Monster Records, 'Let's Go Everywhere', which showcases the versatility of our favorite jazz band out there. You'll aslo find John Medeski playing keyboards along with Steven Bernstein (from Sex Mob) on trumpet and Sharon Jones on vocals (with a few others...) on the 'Baby Loves Jazz' album - one that all parents should get when they get tired of FM Radio and other kinds of debilitating kids music, one that will ravish the youngsters in the backseat!

Finally, everybody must know the Justice 'D.A.N.C.E.' track by now, but we've taken the liberty of playing just before this one a bit of the track that must have inspired such a worldwide single, the MASSIVE hit from Erik Rug and MC Dynamax, remixed by L'Aroye and Ky, 'Tribute To My People'. If you don't own this 12 inch yet, find yourself a new record supplier cos' this was THE track of 2006. Nuff' said.

Grant Phabao and Djouls - 21st Century Roots Vol.4
(MP3 Podcast on ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C., 2007-11-18

Info :
A few months have gone by with only one or two new mixes appearing over here but thankfully, we haven't received much complaints yet. After this nearly-hiatus period, we're glad to announce we're back with bags and bags and bags of new records to play. Beside our usual record-digging over-activity, cool labels like Tru Thoughts, Ubiquity, Freestyle, Melting Pot, First Word, Ropeadope, Sonar Kollektiv, Les Disques du Telegraphe or T.I.M.E.C. have been sending us some incredible stuff recently, and we cannot thank them all nearly enough.

Things start heating up with a '21st Century Roots Vol.4', carefully selected by one of our most persistent DJs, Djouls, and especially blended by the number 1 french soundmaster, Grant Phabao, whose MP3s might sound better than your WAVs... As you might already know, this series focuses on reggae-tinted music that's been produced after the year 2000. Expect a tight selection of roots reggae, jamaican funk and dub - perfectly fit all the lazy iPod smokers out there. The Mr Vegas vs Grant Phabao bootleg is 100 percent exclusive and we'd love to get more info on The Flying Customs band/group/artist (??) who sent us this back-to-the-roots marvel...

Coming soon, a serie of 3 new Molesting Laura mixes for all lovers of surprising covers...

Paris DJs Soundstem - African Mashed Potato Popcorn Vol.6
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C., 2007-10-15

Info :
African music is shining on ParisDJs.com, with this already 6th (!) volume of our African Mashed Potato Popcorn series, carefully crafted by our loyal co-founders Grant Phabao and Djouls from the T.I.M.E.C. music agency. Those guys have been digging for rare and trippy african grooves for many years now, and after a relaxed 'Afrocool' selection (Vol.4) and a roof-tearing-off 'Afrogroove' one (Vol.5), they've opted this time for a special psychedelic mashup of afro-trips from all over the world.
Things kick off on a surprising extract from Miami's top-ranking Latin maestros The Spam Allstars, an incredible mixture of styles called 'Afrika' - off the grid and perfectly fit for this mix. Next comes The Rhythm Funk Masters, another band you've probabaly never heard of, they come from Finland and have released an essential melting pot of Afrofunk on the Japanese P-Vine label. Distributors should fight for this record...
Hydroponic Sound System is the hub of production team/lab rats Rube and Skin from Dallas, Texas. 'Shu Bop Shu Bop' is extracted from their self-released second album from 2005. Those guys have issued so many records and digital tracks that they're really hard to follow and categorize, but the chase's nearly always worth the effort.
New Yorkers' Bama and The Family 'Feeling Good' track was originally released of a 7 inch on the Afro-styled Soul Fire subsidiary label Lenar. Both labels are closed now but in 2004 Leon Michels (from El Michels Affair) and Jeff Silverman (from Soul Fire Records) formed Truth and Soul Records in Brooklyn, NY, who's been ever since releasing (and re-releasing) new classic tracks of retro soul, funk and afro-funk.
We then go back to Germany at the end of the nineties with the godfathers of deep funk, namely The Poets Of Rhythm, under the Pan-Atlantics moniker. Check their incredible discography on Ninja-Obsession.net. The longest track on this mix is from Euforquestra, an eclectic world-beat jamband from Iowa City, who tried mixing afrobeat and roots cuban music on their 'Explorations in Afrobeat' album issued in 2006. And closing this superb and hypnotic set is 'Pharaoh', extracted from the rather hard to find third album from Topaz, 'Afro-Dub Sessions'. They're from Austin, Texas and add the to this demonstration that, from all over the globe, Afrobeat rules!

Tracklisting :
01. The Spam Allstars - Afrika
(from 'Electricodomesticos' album, 2007 / Spamusica) USA
02. Rhythm Funk Masters - Nudinuff
(from 'Afro-american-arctic' CD, 2007 / P-Vine) FINLAND

Paris DJs Soul Soundsytem - Cee-Lo Is The One
(MP3 Podcast on ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C. TIMEC118, 2006-08-20

Info :
We've been listening to Cee-Lo Green's music for years now, and after being astonished by his vocal prowesses on recent TV shows (MTV, Jools Holland, etc), we couldn't resist a well-deserved tribute. A member of Atlanta hip hop act Goodie Mob in the second half of the 90s, he's then started successful solo career with many singles, two superb albums in 2002 and 2004, and numerous collaborations and vocal featurings: with Outkast, their Dungeon Family collective, Common, Twista, Trick Daddy, De La Soul, Rhazel, Black-Eyed Peas... The list goes on and on and recently culminated with his Gnarls Barkley combination, with 'Grey Album' guy Danger Mouse, and their worldwide hit-single 'Crazy' (which you must have heard by now if you weren't lost on some stupid island for months for some reason). Cee-Lo started as a rapper, but he's also an incredible funk and soul singer, a producer and a songwriter. Weird and colorful, drenched into p-funk and soul, high-pitched and sometimes toon-ish, his voice is unique. Some would say that's too much talent in just one guy. We say Cee Lo is the one.

Our second volume of afro grooves from around the world gathers some rare Nigerian funk from the Ikenga Super Stars Of Africa, The Funkees, One World and Ofege. You can now go hunting for the LPs on Ebay... We've also stumbled upon an incredible UK pressing of an LP called "The Body Music" from a band called Afro Funk which we think is from Ghana. If you have more info on this please share it with us cos' those african beats & soul have been playing repeatedly on our stereo for days now! Oddities come from Karl Denson, former sax player from late 90's US retro-funk band The Greyboy Allstars, the closing track from his fire-smoking funk album "the Bridge" from 2004 is an afrobeat monster we couldn't not play. For vinyl addicts, the track is available on a glorious 12 inch thanks to Adrian Gibson's Freestyle Records little label (UK). You will also hear that we've been diggin deep in our own crates, with "Wilderness", a track from Manu Dibango issued on a rare 1972 library album... and then reissued by our friend Manu Boubli on the mighty "Racubah" compilation. The mix closes with a sunny piece of African pop from Ghanean Kelenkye Band that should leave you eargerly waiting for a third volume of "African Mashed Potato Popcorn"... coming soon on your favorite Podcast!

The Lone Ranger - Dub Salvador - A Grant Phabao Mix
(MP3 Podcast on ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C. TIMEC078, 2006-04-07

Info :
The Lone Ranger is one of Jamaica's most influential early dancehall DJs. He was twice voted No 1 deejay on the island, in 1979 and 1980. He helped pioneer a newly rhythmic, on-the-beat rhyming style that led DJ toasting into the modern age, and punctuated his lyrics with bizarre exclamations and sound effects ("bim" and "ribbit" were his favorites) that made him perhaps the most imaginative stylist of his time. Without Lone Ranger, no Yellowman, no Shabba Ranks, no Sean Paul...
Thanks to the incredible production skills of French dubmeister Grant Phabao, who crafted for him a splendid album last year ("Kulchaklash" / to be pronounced "Culture Clash"), The Lone Ranger is now back on the charts, with rub-a-dub partner Carlton Livingston and their cover of Dandy Livingston's hit "(A Message To You) Rudie". This new single is making waves all over the irie globe on a strictly limited edition 12 inch (500 copies only!), issued on T.I.M.E.C./The Pusher in Europe (with both extended and dub remixes), and on an already out-of-print 7 inch, issued on Silver Bullet in Jamaica. This marvelous slice of pure jamaican spice is a winning crowd-pleaser sure to hit the spot every time, we couldn't let it out of this exclusive mix of oldies, rarities and classics, so... enjoy!

Grant Phabao and Djouls - African Mashed Potato Popcorn Vol.1
(MP3 Podcast) T.I.M.E.C. TIMEC095, 2006-02-21

Info :
Don't be misled by the calm and tripping opening Kenyan track from Mombasa, which is just an introduction to the afro grooves that are offered afterwards. After this, you may then embark on a tribalistic trip to Nigeria, with afrofunk marvels from the Ikenga Super Stars Of Africa (find the album!), Nkengas, and The Apostles. Your voyage will also visit South Africa, with 70's afropop oddities by Jabula and Assagai, and Cameroon, with the afro space jazz of Franck Biyong and Massak. In order to be accurate in this mashed mix of various afro meals, we also couldn't leave you without another slice of Antibalas magic, who are, along with frenchman Doctor L, leading the now worldwide afrobeat scene into the 21st century with an undeniable, exceptional, revolutionnary and graceful talent for going forward. And big thanks to Mackdaddy who gave me access to his vast collection of African Music for this selection of Afro Funk and Soul 1971-2004.

Grant Phabao & Djouls - Are Molesting Laura Vol.4
(MP3 Podcast) T.I.M.E.C. TIMEC093, 2006-01-18

Info :
"Are Molesting Laura Vol.4", yes, it's already the fourth volume of the adventures of Grant Phabao & Djouls in the regions of the strange music, unreal covers, bastard pop and new remixes! After a first one available only on the p2p, with a surprising bootleg of Roots Manuva and Serge Gainsbourg, a second volume diffused on Radio Latina in the form of a latin-delirious selection of tracks, a third volume to download in here with its unmissable bootleg of Grand Master Flash vs Mel Brooks (with bits of Beastie boys in it), here's a number four that'll rank among the crustiest, with three bootlegs chosen with intensive care out of an explosive outburst of creative production that comes from all over the world (for the DJs greatest pleasure).
The entry is signed by a Parisian who goes by the Dopplebanger guise, it's an extremely well crafted immediate bootleg of the just out "Can I Have It Like That" from Pharrell (N.E.R.D./Neptunes) with the "Can I Kick It?" from A Tribe Called Quest (1994). A future classic, followed by a series of covers and remixes rather crazy, sometimes mad and often funky as hell, to finally end up with two tasty bootlegs, a "classico" to begin with, opposing Primal Scream's crossover hit "Loaded" with Rae & Christian featuring The Jungle Brothers's "Play One", extracted from their first album; and for dessert a whole new bootleg, very exclusive, only for you, can you imagine how nice we are, clashing without an ounce of shame Kinny & Horne's "Why Me" with Max Romeo's "Chase The Devil". For the historians the Horne in Kinny & Horne is Espen Horne which could be found in the "Are Molesting Laura Vol.3" mix available recently on ParisDJs, he was before called himself Bobby Hugues Combination (for Stereo Deluxe records) or Bobby Hugues Experience (afor Ultimate Dillema)... (for those interested check his complete discography).

Tracklisting :
01. Dopplebanger - Can I Kick It Like That
"Can I Have It Like That" by Pharrell (from "Can I Have It Like That" CD-Single, 2006, EMI)

Grant Phabao & Djouls - 21st Century Roots
(MP3 Podcast) T.I.M.E.C., 2005-10-31

What good roots music is happening in this new millenium, rotted by the return to the 80s sounds? In Paris, the Indian summer isn't ending and we don't complain. That's why, to conclude in style this lovely month of October, we decided to offer here a special "reggae, hip hop & dub", in the form of a palace of discoveries and remixes. Including some burning Parisian productions, unheard yet on the radio, signed by Grant Phabao, Seven Dub, the Mighty Blunts or Professor Oz. They are accompanied by some recent "instant classics", for a world tour of the roots vibration, with albino Afro-American rapper Brother Ali, San Francisco reggae masters Groundation, Russian Dj Vadim and his new hip hop project One Self (with Blu Rum 13 and Yarah Bravo), Californian Matt Haines (alias The Rip Off Artist), Germaneers Boozoo Bajou or Burnt Friedman with the Nu-Dub Players, Englishman Biggabush (alias Lightning Head, half of Rockers Hi-Fi), or New-Yorkers Chronic Sonata, remixed by Grant Phabao following a connection on the Web between the TIMEC label in Paris and Bastard Jazz in Brooklyn...
