Alexander Zacepin - Robots Dance (from 'a Pivot From The Skies') 09. Evgeniy Krilatov - Ordered To Take Alive Theme (from 'Ordered To Take Alive') 10. Eduard Artemiev - Crusade (from 'Siberiade') Info : Now it may safely be said that the heritage of Soviet cinematography accounts for dozens of movies which are marked not only by distinguished decisions of stage direction, unique theatrical and actory style, but also by musical decisions which can be referred to the worldwide cultural heritage. By the way, this tradition was born in USSR in 20-30s of XX century when the production of films with jazz arrangements began in Soviet Russia. The total volume of accumulated material is amazingly great and diverse. For example, American and European famous soundtracks were re-issued and sampled many times. In our country such a work wasn't fulfilled, therefore now the primary task for development of this trend is to create a catalogue of Soviet films and soundtracks which afterwards will be issued in the form of albums and compilations on vinyl disks, CD or, may be, in the form of reworks. Several enthusiasts already began the search for rarities. If you strike 'Soviet jazz-funk films' in the search bar on www.youtube.com, you'll find many musical fragments. A few recordings were issued on vinyl, however all original recordings exist and are kept in record offices and funds of Russian Federation, CIS countries and Baltic States. Another important task is to decide upon a problem of royalty, both for recordings themselves and for fragments and samples that are used, because it can became a sufficiently wide room for manoeuvre for contemporary artists. Tue, 5 August 2008 ![]() Ivan Tchijevsky - Diggin' Up Two Rare Concerts (exclusive mix for ParisDJs.com) 2008-08-04 Tracklisting : 01. One day In Kiev - Jazz Ensemble 'Mugam' 02. Concert for the voice by Constantin Petrosyan Info : This is my fifth podcast, and to celebrate it, I have prepared something special, jazzy and at the same time, sodden with Caucasus folk culture. This podcast consists of two parts: First – is a fragment (pictures of Caucasus) of an jazz-ensemble called "Mugam" lead by Vagif Mustafa-Zade (1978). Vagif Mustafa-zade – was a prize winner of such festivals as "Tallin-66", "Tallin-67" and "Jazz-69" in Azerbaijan. In 1977 Vagif became a prize-winner of an United Jazz festival in Donezk. Jazz festival "Tbilisi-78" has brought him a name as the best pianist in USSR. Having taken participation in the International jazz composition contest held in Monaco in 1979, Vagif won the First prize and received a beautiful white piano as a prize. Finding a more detailed biography of Vagif Mustafa-zade isn't that hard, most importantly is the effect his music brings on you. Second part of the podcast is a fragment of a big-band concert by Vladimir Chekasin, with an assistance of an composer named Constantin Petrosyan. The voice of the project became Tatevick Oganesyan – the "queen" of soviet jazz vocal, the Russian Ella Fitzgerald. Even nowadays, she is still matchless in the jazz mainstream. Tatevick's manner of singing is heavily influenced by traditional Armenian music. She has sang in America, Europe, Australia. She received applauses at Lincoln center and Carnegie Hall. Kadans - Morning Samba (1986) 10. Barometer - Frost and Sun (1983) Note : In Soviet Union there is only one label - Melody Records... Links : myspace.com/tchizevsky headz.fm Info (english) : Latin-American rhythms have always been fascinating and widely spread across the world. And the Soviet Union was no exception. It's quite possible to say that in the former times, USSR had lowered the iron curtain to let all that cultural information slip through, and it was perceived in the right way. Many records, soundtracks to soviet films were influenced a lot by those Latin-American rhythms. Here you can easily spot the cortege of the carnival samba or afro-cuban flavors, sometimes it's even hard to believe that all of that was recorded in the snowy Moscow, in Caucasus, somewhere near the Baltic sea, and a really old movie with a rhythmical samba of the 70th accidentally played on TV was shot somewhere in Crimea. The uniqueness of the provided material lies in what is called the "globalization of music", when for example we come across a soviet versions of compositions made by Gershwin, Mendes, Deodato, national songs of Latin America, which were originally recovered and recomposed by people living on the other side of the continent. For example by Russians, Jews, Georgians, Armenians, Uzbeks, Latvians and Estonians the nations which are quite unfamiliar with Latin-American culture. Isn't that really a multinational thing? Without a doubt, we must refer this fact to a positive process of the dialogue civilisations and look at this cultural layer as a heritage of an ex, in former times - unified soviet culture. And besides, it is not supposed to consider those processes from a viewpoint of some kind of special, integrant power of the Soviet Union, or as a mighty, not long ago, geopolitical unit or a commonly revolutional opinion in Latin America and USSR. Everything is pretty simple. For example, a lot of the presented artists in the podcast are just really good friends of my family and close relatives, who, as us, used to meet with each other and play or listen to good music. Links : myspace.com/tchizevsky headz.fm Info (english) : After more than one year of trying to upper the standards of rare groove podcasting, we decided to open our programs to more musical experts than just our crew of Parisian crate-diggers. Our first guest comes from Russia, with love of course but also a selection of impossible-to-find Soviet Russia grooves. Here's the first half hour, with a 'Part 2' coming up quite soon, and a little introduction specially written by our host of the week, Ivan Tchizhevsky: 'Welcome to Ivan Tchizhevsky podcast! This mix was recorded in Moscow (Russia) and it is a compilation of old records released in the Soviet Union during the 1970s. It is hard to underestimate the effort of musicians who produced those records because at that time it was a question of working really hard to release something worth listening. Not only the poorer technology complicated the process, but the Communist party strong ideological control gave musicians a substantial pain in the ass as well. It was a multi-level vigilance by editors on various stages of production which filtered off everything that would not correspond with soviet ideology. Moreover, because of the 'Iron Curtain' musicians in the USSR could not get necessary information about the ultimate tendencies in contemporary music. We can only guess how many excellent records were suppressed by the communist censors. The advanced music styles like jazz and funk were considered being 'vices of the West' and the Party bosses liked ballet more than music. However, this mix represents only a microscopic part of vast amount of great records made in the Soviet Union. These records could be considered as a cultural heritage which yet has to be discovered (or rediscovered) by music-lovers all over the world.' Links : myspace.com/tchizevsky headz.fm Info (english) : After more than one year of trying to upper the standards of rare groove podcasting, we decided to open our programs to more musical experts than just our crew of Parisian crate-diggers. Our first guest comes from Russia, with love of course but also a selection of impossible-to-find Soviet Russia grooves. Here's the first half hour, with a "Part 2" coming up quite soon, and a little introduction specially written by our host of the week, Ivan Tchizhevsky : "Welcome to Ivan Tchizhevsky podcast! Moreover, because of the "Iron Curtain" musicians in the USSR could not get necessary information about the ultimate tendencies in contemporary music. We can only guess how many excellent records were suppressed by the communist censors. The advanced music styles like jazz and funk were considered being "vices of the West" and the Party bosses liked ballet more than music. However, this mix represents only a microscopic part of vast amount of great records made in the Soviet Union. These records could be considered as a cultural heritage which yet has to be discovered (or rediscovered) by music-lovers all over the world."
